Titan XP Collector's Edition

Nvidia is releasing what appears to be Star Wars themed Titan X models, for the Light and Dark side of the Force.

Quote

Nvidia is giving you a new reason to have a see-through side panel on your giant gaming desktop. The high-end Nvidia Titan Xp graphics card now comes in two Star Wars-themed versions -- a Jedi Order GPU representing the light side and a Galactic Empire version for the dark.

The Jedi GPU lights up in green, while the Empire model is red. Nvidia says there's even more that went into the design, which is a surprising amount of detail for a component that's going to be locked away inside a computer case:

"The Jedi Order GPU simulates the wear and tear and battle-worn finish of many items used by the Rebel Alliance, resulting from its diecast aluminum cover being subjected to an extensive, corrosive salt spray. Conversely, the Galactic Empire GPU's finish features simple, clean lines, emulating the high-end, orderly nature of the resource-rich Empire."

The Star Wars cards will be available in mid-November for $1,200. There's no price or date for other territories yet, but the standard non-Star-Wars Titan Xp card costs £1,149 or $AU1,950. As a bonus, users of Nvidia's GeForce Experience software (which optimizes game settings and updates drivers) can preorder starting Nov. 8.

Do they not realise the majority of people who'll buy this card will most likely have a windowed case to show off said details? o.O

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

One of my friends wants to put 2 in his system. He loves the look. Personally I wouldn't spend the money on anything more than a 1080ti, especially with no performance improvement in games.

The idea of a limited edition star wars titan Xp seemed stupid to me but after see the cards I hate to say that they look really nice. They clearly put a good amount of thought into and it shows. I guess having more options is good especially when they are options that someone would actually want.

I wonder how much Disney had to shell out to Nvidia to get them to do this. The star wars nerd in me likes how, from the side, they sorta look like a lightsaber handle, but I'd never buy one.

If I'd ever shell out money on a high end card like that, I'd probably end up slapping water cooling on it anyway.

BTW - God tier beard.

I wasn't around when old trilogy was released, but I do remember when Ep I came out. Merch that was available was nowhere near this, with last year imo taking the crown. The collaborations with other products, the products in general, it's way worse when before. And yes, I enjoyed it as well, but this is ridiculous. No, I don't want that star wars csn opener.

Not sure if the situation was the same outside my country. Then again with all tech advances, it was inevitable.

Nice thing for people who'd like to do some kind of Star Wars themed PC showcase builds.

As for the merch in general - the merchandise is what saved the original trilogy from oblivion in the mid nineties, before Phantom Menace was announced and after Return of the Jedi was already over 10 years old. Collectible figurines, trading cards, board games, role playing games, books and countless others - these were the reason why when the Phantom Menace was announced, people - not only those who watched the originals in the cinemas but a new generation of fans as well - actually cared.

I thought the Titan wasn't supposed to be a gaming card? what kind of "professional" would buy a star-wars themed card for their workstation?

I like the look of them, but no I would not.

However, anyone who does buy one is virtually guaranteed to have a collectors item on their hands.  I doubt we'll see many of these sold used, except for maybe those trying to grab a quick buck by charging an arm, a leg, a spleen and both kidneys.

They can be used as gaming cards, although they're more similar in power to a Quadro. The Titans also perform better in games than Quadros do and are marketed more towards enthusiasts I believe.

That's true, and so are the GTX 1080 Ti's. Though the GTX 1080 Ti in gaming is less powerful on paper, they're only about 3-5% on average behind the TITAN Xp.

That being said, the TITAN Xp can be used for gaming since it uses the same GeForce drivers, and the same versions as well, they're really meant to be used primarily as workstation alternatives to Quadros for those (like me) who are maximizing their bang for the buck on compute power and don't really need (or can't leverage the drivers) a Quadro for their workflow, even if their employer would be able to afford it and write it off as a business expense (which is tax deductible).
