Help. I just can't seem to find anything! Laptop for gaming & designing.

Hi, I'm looking for a laptop for both work and recreational purposes. I am a multimedia designer, I do illustrations, 2D animations, graphic design etc. I need a laptop with great colour accuracy and really good future proofed performance in gaming. I also don't want to be spending like crazy amounts of money, but if push comes to shove I guess I'll have to. So far the only one I think of really is the Gigabyte Aero 15, with a 24 gig RAM config for rendering animations. Other than that I can't find any other options. Please help with any recommendations!

Basically:

  • Great colour accuracy (don't need anything more than 1080p res)
  • 1060 or higher gpu
  • Lots of RAM for rendering
  • At least 1TB of storage
  • Decent price :\

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Define Decent Price. You're looking at $1000 and up for that kind of hardware.

Heyyy, I guess I would preferably like to be in the region of $1000 - 1500 . Also maybe you know places that can also ship to South Africa, that would be really helpful too.

I can assure that you neither of those is happening

You might want to wait for Ryzen laptops to see what they have to offer.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

Like do you want an IPS display, or do you need 100% Adobe RGB or something?

IPS would be nice, and I guess 70%argb and higher would be okay.

Most any decent IPS display should be fine then

Coffee Lake Laptops are about to come out as well

https://www.anandtech.com/show/11916/clevo-announces-p870tm-laptop-coffee-lake-dtr

However ASUS at least has already announced 8 core Ryzen laptops, and assuming they're cheap, Ryzen Vega APU laptops look alright, especially with fast RAM.

So guess it's just a waiting game at this point. Anyways, how can I tell what is a "decent IPS" display? Any pointers?

Just look of reviews mostly, or the few people who test color accuracy.

Mobile Tech review does a lot of laptops

Alienware 13 R3. OLED panel + 1060.

Otherwise, Aero 15.

Honestly, if you're looking for just decent, most laptops have decent IPS panels these days.

Thanks for the Youtube recommendation. The Alienware seems perfect its just that 13 inches is simply too small and the AW15 is such a huge price hike. Is the Lenovo Y720 any good? But I guess for that price rather go with the Aero. Do most laptops with IPS displays have 70%+ argb?

check on notebookcheck (its not a youtube channel). it depends. even the aero doesn't have 70% argb. For that level of color accuracy, you'll be looking for the 17in 4k screens in most case.

otherwise get things like the XPS15. Macbook Pros have very color accurate screens as well.

The XPS 15 has a 100% AdobeRGB colour space monitor - if you select the 4k touch version.

You can spec it (or add) upto 32Gb of DD4 however, the GPU is a nVidia 1050 on the 9560 version (older 9550 had a 960m). As it has been out for a while, you'll probably get a good deal on a used one if required.

I too am looking for a laptop for both gaming and designing. I've done lots of research into figuring out which laptops have the best price, screen and performance and are available in my country (Malaysia). My options are:

1. HP Omen 15 ce030TX

- 15.6 inch FHD IPS anti-glare display

- 8GB ram DDR4

- Nvidia GTX 1050Ti (4GB GDDR5 dedicated)

2. Asus GL502VM

- 15 inch FHD 60Hz Anti-glare with 72% NTSC and G-sync

- 8GB ram DDR4

- Nvidia GTX 1060 (3GB/6GB GDDR5)

3. Wait for the Asus GL503 to arrive which who knows when. Its not even announced here yet.

Unfortunately, they don't sell any Dell laptops here so the Inspiron and XPS models are out of the picture.

As for other ultra-books, tempting but I already currently own a surface pro 3. Besides, they're too expensive.

Acer laptops? They boast colour accuracy but meh.

MSI? I often hear people having issues with these laptops so it's not that reliable?

Anyways, just wanna hear your opinions from you guys.

If this is the new one with TB3, that is quite interesting.

You should really just link a Malaysian online retailer and I can take a look.

Avoid Asus FX,GL line, different kinds of issues
GL503 only good in display, otherwise pretty much the same with the old GL553 (still have issues)

Acer gaming laptops have questionable QC
MSI GV,GL,PL,GP,GP and old GE,PE laptops are mediocre. New GE, GS and GT are good models.

Why don't consider Clevo laptops like Commandos and Illegear?

Feel free to PM me. Maybe I could help you to choose the best laptop for you.

I own the GL502VM

It's a solid gaming laptop which handles what I play pretty well and it's alright for some photo editing although I tend to check with my iPad Pro afterwards to ensure proper accuracy since it doesn't cover all of the sRGB space.

The cooling is not the greatest but it's significantly better than my last laptop (we're talking 65 degrees CPU and 58 GPU in TF2 where my last would be 82 and 73 respectively) and doesn't throttle (undervolting is recommended however) and the build is solid enough but not outstanding although I recommend staying away from the GL502VS since the higher TDP of the 1070 is just enough to overwhelm its cooling system.

As far as I know, there's a Malaysian-based company named Illegear that sells custom laptops based off Clevo bases and provides different GPU options based on the model and you can also specify whether you want to upgrade the thermal paste and have the display professionally calibrated.

If display accuracy is critical, that could be an option and it's not a bad one, since these boutique builders don't cater to the mainstream (meaning they don't sell a ton), they can focus more on each individual laptop and catering to what the customer wants.

The Workhorse (AMD-powered custom desktop)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | GPU: MSI X Trio GeForce RTX 2070S | RAM: XPG Spectrix D60G 32GB DDR4-3200 | Storage: 512GB XPG SX8200P + 2TB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda Compute | OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

The Portable Workstation (Apple MacBook Pro 16" 2021)

SoC: Apple M1 Max (8+2 core CPU w/ 32-core GPU) | RAM: 32GB unified LPDDR5 | Storage: 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD | OS: macOS Monterey

The Communicator (Apple iPhone 13 Pro)

SoC: Apple A15 Bionic | RAM: 6GB LPDDR4X | Storage: 128GB internal w/ NVMe controller | Display: 6.1" 2532x1170 "Super Retina XDR" OLED with VRR at up to 120Hz | OS: iOS 15.1

The new GE, GS and GT series are wayyy too expensive. I'm looking for a laptop that has what I need under RM6000 or $1500 USD.

As for Illegear, I've never heard of them but after researching their laptops a bit, they don't seem to have full sRGB coverage. I think the least ugly ones are the Laguna (Z series) or Raven (Q series) but after customizing it with:

- GTX1060

- Intel i7

- A non-stock display

- 8GB ram

- Professional colour calibration

...it totals to above RM7000 which is too much. At that price point it rivals the MSI GS series.

http://store.illegear.com/z-series/148-illegear-laguna.html

But I guess my main priority is the screen. If FHD IPS panels don't have 100% sRGB then I might consider 4k panels...which maybe a little overkill.

Hey guys Iv'e doing some research and I think I'm either going with the Asus GL502VS or the MSI GE63VR, I just feel like they are the best value for money with the 1070's and screen quality.  Any thoughts? Iv'e been swaying more to the Asus.

I actually think I'm going to go with the MSI GE63VR becasue it has 89%argb even though it is a TN panel. Also the RGB keyboard doesn't hurt :D
