HDMI over Ethernet? Thoughts

So I ran across this article on LifeHacker and wondered how something like this would actually work. Any thoughts on the subject? This would probably make an interesting video if Linus is eavesdropping on this post.

 

If it even works, do you think the quality would suffer since it is going over a line with other data already on it?

sounds stupid, but i'd like to think if the data doesn't interfere it works.

maybe the ethernet adapter on the other side will freak out that there's a bunch of other data that's unrelated to ethernet, and same with router.

maybe even the router will think that's a upstream, and do 'something' with it

 

if you meant just using ethernet as a cable, it works. the difference between a hdmi and ethernet cable is the amount of pins and the head, the cable is the same. 

 

 

quality would either be.. broke or perfectly fine. it works, or it doesn't.

Ethernet Cat 7 ~10gbps 55 Meters

 

You will run into Frame Rate & Resolution Issues. 

Along with Latency with the conversion, compression and decompression, Etc.

It works fine for most commercial display/signage purposes. Far better for many reasons than running HDMI/VGA cables when it can be avoided.

That said, I have not and would not use it in a home theater scenario.
