Can one computer access the internet through another computer?

Can I hookup my desktop to my laptop through ethernet and have my desktop access the internet through my laptop's wifi connection? Lan ports on my router are broken and I need to upload a large file in one go.

Yes, simply share your WiFi internet to the ethernet port.

Instead of trying to jury rig some sort of strange networking stuff, wouldn't it be easier to copy the file to a USB then copy the file from the USB to the laptop and then upload it?  That would remove any confusion as to whether or not it was working.  You didn't say how large the file is.

My work laptop only has 100gb of free space. The filed I need to upload is nearly 1/2 a terabyte. I also cant split it up into smaller pieces without corrupting it.

yes, network is OS independent

 

You could do the same with a Linux computer and a PS4

oh wait ... totally forgot, you actually need a cross-over cable for that.

 

Unless you have the appropriate cable or a switch, it won't be possible.

All recent interfaces ( like 2000+ recent ) are auto-mdix capable, so they shouldn't require a cross-over cable ^^ In a world where there was no auto-mdix, you would need a cross-over cable in order to make that work

go into one of the devices lan adapters 

go to adapters properties

advanced properties

select crossover if adapter allows?

no crosscable needed
