Buying a laptop for Xmas, should I wait for Coffee Lake?

Considering the entire 6 core lineup won't actually be available for the desktop Z370 platform until like February-ish (despite being released), I would say no, to say it would arrive before Christmas would be like... well an early Christmas haha. I am on a waitlist for the i7-8700k and have been told to wait 2-4 months. So, if you see a good deal on a laptop and don't want to wait then maybe just buy one now.

I'm considering buying a gaming laptop this Christmas. I'll be using it mainly for coding, video editing and casual gaming (by "casual gaming" I mean all types of games including demanding ones, but not very often, like 2-3 time a month). Do you think the i7 7700HQ is still worth it, or should I wait for Coffee Lake for my particular needs? I need it for this Christmas though.

 

Also, do you think it's good laptop overall? I'll be using it as a desktop most of the time, so with an external monitor and peripherals, so I don't mind the TN panel.

The main thing with Coffee Lake that I can see is increased core count and the 7700HQ is already quad-core with hyper threading so I think it will be perfectly fine. The 1050ti is a little low for me personally since I love to crank the settings but overall it looks great.

I would wait for Coffee Lake, as most CPU's in Laptops these day are only dual cores with hyper threading unto 4 threads and the new 8th gens are 4 cores, it will be worth the wait and the Laptop will last a lot long and it will be a lot quicker.

Well I thought mobile CPU's would have 6 cores too.

Depending on the specs, U class i7 CPU's were previously 2 core and are now 4 core, which has been a significant upgrade, these CPU's were seen mostly in ultrabooks and MacBook pros. That being said it depends on which 6 core CoffeeLake CPU's from the mainstream lineup are integrated into the mobile (laptop) market. Unless it is a $3500+ laptop I doubt we will see something like the 6C 12T i7-8700 in a laptop, they will pull to much power.

 

But if it was me I would wait and see what comes out from the CoffeeLake lineup on the mobile platform because a 6C 6T CPU would be a big upgrade over the i7-7700HQ.
