Sli 580 vs 1070

Somebody offered to trade 2x 580 nitro For my GTX 1070 msi oc. Should I do it or pas in the trade ?

1070, you'll get more consistent performance. It's also a beast of a card for the money

Yep. I think crossfire support is even worse than SLI, so a single card is defo better.

In theory 2x 580's would be better, but Crossfire isn't very well optimised. A single 1070 would be better and less hassle, and not to mention use less power.

2 Radeon RX 580s? I would take them and resell them with current pricing which will get you enough for brand new 1070 and some extra cash

I would definitely keep the 1070 if I were you. Maybe if your monitor is freesync it might be worth considering but crossfire/SLI support isn't always great and my general rule is 1 faster card > 2 slower cards.

If your willing to put in the work you can sell tham on ebay for 700+ and get your self a 1080TI

Resolution? The Lower the resolution, the worse the Multi GPU scaling.

It's a few % slower RX 480, but same thing kinda.

 

In ALL resolution, even in 4k, 1 GTX 1070 beats out 2x RX 480 in crossfire, in terms of overall summary performance over all tested Games.

 

2x RX 480 wins, if you ONLY compare those hand full of Games, that do have any Multi-GPU  Scaling.

2/3 of all modern Games don't have Crossfire/Sli scaling at ALL, so in those, you will only have 1 RX 580 running, the other won't do anything.

If you are very unlucky, you might sit at 40-45% usage for both - getting less performance than with a single RX 580. While a GTX 1070 still beats both.

 

 

TL;DR:

- Considering ALL games overall: GTX 1070 wins, and gives ALWAYS the consistent 100% performance. No driver issues, Multi-GPU Profiles, etc etc.

- 1 GTX 1070 consumes only 150w~, if it's a stock Bios. Custom OC models might go up to 160-180 watt.

- 1 RX 580 Custom consumes around 200 Watt. You plan to use 2 of those --> 400 watt. 400w with problems vs. 175w~ without problems. The Choice is easy.

 

 

Remember: Multi GPU with weaker / older / midrange Cards is a completely stupid Idea. It was a stupid idea 15 years ago, and it's still a stupid idea (now more than ever).

If that were a good idea, everyone would do it

 

--> Keep your GTX 1070. It's the superior Choice.
