3570k vs 3770 vs 3770k for modern gaming

I got an old z77 mobo laying around from one of my friends mobo and I'm going to pick up a 3rd gen cpu to replace my i3-4170 in my current rig. My question is, which cpu should I go for for the best gaming price/performance. I have a hyper 212 evo laying around, so I plan to do some modest OCing if I get a k chip. Also, I've been able to OC a 3470 (non k) mildly (up to 4 ghz) with this mobo, so I'm wondering if I would be able to do the same to the 3770. If so, I feel like it would be the best deal bc it's only maybe $10-20 more than the 3570k on ebay and since I've only got a modest cooler, I'd probably be thermal limited around 4.4-4.6 ghz on the i5 k chip, but I should be able to get anywhere from 4-4.4 ghz on the locked 3770 (if I'm able to modify the multiplier slightly, like I was with the 3470).

Keep in mind, the pricing spread on these chips are about $60-80, which the 3570k going for around $50-60, the 3770 for around $70-80, and the 3770k for around $100-120. Of course, I could always pick up a 3470/3570 for about $40-50 if you guys think that it REALLY wouldn't be worth it to spend the extra on the higher tier chips.

Anyway, I'm really tempted to get the max performance chip to help make this platform last as long as possible, so I will get my money's worth out of the ddr3, mobo, and cpu. Ideally, I plan to keep this setup for the next 2-3 years until maybe zen2/3 comes out, depending on how all those chips perform. However, if someone could confirm that I WOULD be able to mildly OC the 3770, then I'll probably just jump on that, since it seems to be the most compelling offer. The mobo in question is a msi z77a-gd65, btw.

I'd be looking on Reddit, prices on eBay are generally pretty inflated.

It's older, so I'd go for the 3770k if you can, and are looking for longevity.

You're just playing at 60hz? What games? There's lots of info you left out ;)

EVENTUALLY, I plan to game at 75-100hz 1440p ultrawide. However, I'll probably upgrade my cpu/platform again before I upgrade my gpu and monitor to that setup.

Currently, I'm looking to play all games, particularly AAA games at 1080p with a locked 60fps. It's hard to say what games in particular, as I don't play much currently, bc my computer is potato, but the goal is locked 60 in pretty much any games that draw my attention.

A good used motherboard is probably the hardest part to find, so now that you have it, get the best CPU you can find.  To get the most out of it, I'd definitely get the 3770k.  And I think 2-3 years is realistic with that CPU.

do you think it would be worth the extra expense over the 3770, particularly when I (theoretically) should be able to OC it an additional 400Mhz over its base clock?

To put it in perspective, the current bid for a 3770 full system (8gb ram, 1 tb hdd) dell system is $103 after shipping, and the current bid for a 3770k (just processor and stock cooler) is $110 after shipping. And yes, I do have the use for the ram and hdd, though not the case, mobo, or psu (currently). But I might use those parts for a future build for a friend.

I just sold my 3770 (non K) system off and it with a 970 was running everything beautifully can can always vouch for one of those, BUT after watching the hardware cunucks guys do the second gen vs 8th gen shootout and seeing the difference Oc'ing the 2nd gen made to gaming FPS Yeah I'd say its worth it to go for a 3770K as you already have the motherboard and a decent cooler.

I'll have to go watch that. Still... yet to get any opinions on if it's worth the EXTRA ability to OC when you buy the 3770k compared to the limited OCing I can do to the 3770.

When you say "looking on Reddit" what exactly do you mean? is there a specific sub reddit for people to sell parts or are you talking about r/buildapcsales?

Why wouldn't you just get a new CPU for your motherboard if you have i3-4170, upgrade it to a i7 4770K or i7 4790K and call it done.

Don't get me wrong a i7 3770K still gets the job done (I have one @ 4.2ghz with GTX 1070) but it's a whole generation older than Haswell and 1 1/2 generations older than Devils Canyon.

I suggests you sell your Z77 motherboard and just upgrade your i3-4170.

Bc I plan to give my whole old system to my GF for school/light gaming and I'd also have to go through the trouble of selling my mobo, cpu, ram, etc that I've already collected.

To top it off, the 3rd gen is just cheaper and from what I've seen doesn't really perform worse than 4th gen chips.

Also, my current system is in a cheap ASUS prebuilt with a proprietary mobo, so that could potentially lead to complications since I want to transfer cases anyway and the mobo is cheap, so I wouldn't be able to OC, so the best I could get would be a locked 4th gen chip which would cost about the same as an unlocked 3rd gen chip which should perform better once OC'd.

... Basically, there's just a ton of reasons for me to upgrade off my z77 platform and not enough performance increase for me to bother dealing with all of the hassles of upgrading my H81/B85 platform.

I think I'll probably grab a 1070, once they drop below the $350 price point again or perhaps an 1160/1170 if I can hold out till their release

Here's another related question, since I have a z77 board, I'm fine with overclocking, and I primarily game, which would perform better, a i5-3570k (OC'ed to maybe 4.5-4.7Ghz) or a i7-3770? Bc they're incredibly similarly priced. I'd say the i7 is maybe $10 more than the i5, if even.
