IoT_Reaper Botnet At 2+ Million Infected Devices

A new botnet has been seen growing on IoT devices, with some code from last year's major botnet Miria, and currently has at least 2 million or more IoT devices infected. Unlike Miria, which spread by cracking weak passwords, this botnet is spreading by using vulnerabilities in devices themselves.

Whereas Mirai was able to spread by cracking weak passwords on IoT devices that oftentimes were never changed from their defaults, Reaper looks for multiple vulnerabilities to exploit, making it potentially capable of spreading to even more devices. Reaper is far more aggressive in this manner—it is actively hacking devices based on multiple security holes, versus simply inputting default or easy-to-guess passwords.

 

So far various device types from routers, to NAS boxes, to linux machines and temperature sensors have been seen as being infected. Because IoT devices tend to receive patches less frequency and less often than other they are far more vulnerable and easier to infect.

Reaper is quickly evolving to exploit an increasing number of vulnerabilities in IoT devices, including wireless IP cameras by companies such as GoAhead, D-Link, AVTech, Netgear, MikroTik, Linksys, Synology, and others. There are patches available for many of the affected devices, but when its comes to IoT devices, consumers are not in the same habit as applying security updates as they are for PCs. As such, Check Point has found Reaper doling out attacks from 60 percent of the corporate networks it tracks.

Really? Wow. It means internet of things like smart appliances connected to the internet. Hue bulbs, security cameras, traffic lights, smart fridges, and the list goes on. If you want an index of all the unprotected ones use this website

Any "smart" device that's accessible from the internet. They can possibly talk to a remote server for control functionality but it's not required. Some examples might be: a wireless security camera, light bulb, toaster, washing machine, amazon and google devices, your smartphone, a toilet, etc.

It's a marketing name for "things" (meaning devices that are not personal computers) that can connect to the internet. This includes, for example, smart TVs.

it's a 10 year old brick phone , I'd be surprised if they could get the virus onto it's 8mb of onboard storage and no data connectivity even with the damn phone right in their hand lol.

Nope, that's how I have most of my stuff setup.

If I need to access via the internet, and it's proved trustworthy, then it gets allowed access but I also check for updates for those devices very often :)

No IoT or "smart" devices here apart from 2 smartphones that don't have access to my network and are turned off whenever I don't need them.  My daily driver is a Nokia 3310 (the real one, not the modern lookalike), so good luck making that part of a botnet.

These IoT devices really should require first time password setup . Default settings on these devices is turning out to be way too much of an issue.
