Simple CPU Power Question

I was wondering what is the best non overclocked  LGA1151 socket for a gtx 1080? I am looking into the silent pc builds Linus has done.

I mean the best processor that doesnt support overclocking in the lga 1151 socket is the i7-7700 or 8700 what is best for your 1080 is based on what games you are playing and at what resolution. The i5-7600(8600) would also be good if you are playing at like 1440p or higher however they will most likely get slightly lower performance at 1080p but the difference would probably be very small. However if you are doing any more professional applications like 3d rendering or stuff like that go for the i7 all the way.

System Specs

CPU: I7-5820k   MOBO:Asus X99 strix   RAM: 32gb corsair Dominator Platinum 2666mhz   GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980TI  PSU: Corsair RM1000i

I love competitive and open world games like fallout. I don't really do multi threaded workloads like video rendering. I'm not a content creator.

I personally would go with an i5-7500 then because its main competitor in the 8th gen i5s is the 8400 and the 7500 is clocked higher so for just playing games it would be my recommendation also it should be really easy to find right now. If you can splurge for an i7 whether thats the 7700(k or not) or an 8700 I would go for that as it will give more performance and ify ou wanted to do more in the future it would be nice

In that case you should be fine with an i5-7600 (4 cores) or i5-8600 (6 cores), both have no Hyperthreading and can save you money compared to the i7s.

if you are going for silent, going for the fastest processor isnt a very good idea.

i'd suggest something like the i5-7600T or i5 7700T, they're essentially fully featured core i5 or i7's, except they trade some clock speed for significantly lower wattage. then pair those with a big heatsink and low fan RPMs.

that said, the combination of silent and a high end GPU is a pretty tough nut to crack.
