AMD wraith spire to Noctua NH-U9S

InertiaSelling

Hi. I've recently overclocked my 1500x (65w tdp). It reaches 3.8GHz with a +0.018V offset, though I usually use slightly higher values because I need to be absolutely certain is doesn't crash while I'm rendering. It looks like a good chip to me, so I was thinking of getting a better cooler and trying to reach 4GHz. Since my computer is mounted in a modded tool case, the cooler would need to be smaller than 125mm. I was thinking of getting a noctua nh-u9s, but I need to know a few things before I pull the trigger.

• Is it a serious upgrade compared to the stock wraith spire, which is rated for 95w on am4 as well ?

• If it is, will it be enough for a (hypothetical) 4GHz overclock ? Noctua says it's meant for cooling 95w am4 CPUs with little OC headroom, but given their reputation, I think (and hope) it might be an understatement.

Thanks.

just saying, why not watercool it with an aio cooler

Because I'd have to use a 120mm one and it would be a tight fit.

I'll try that tomorrow, probably. Still need to know whether the u9s would suffice if I managed a stable 4GHz overclock, though.

Watercooling isnt always the better option. The best air coolers for like 80 bucks match water coolers and they have less points of failure.

I have a Cryorig h5 ultimate and a Ryzen 1600,  coming from the stock cooler I noticed a solid 8-10 degree difference while under load or overclocked.  My CPU was a lot more stable while overclocking in that 3.8-4.0Ghz range. I mainly use the computer for gaming so I just keep it stock unless playing a very demanding title that would benefit from an overclock.   Hope this helps.

I don't think I have enough room for a 120mm aio, but feel free to look and tell me if you find somewhere to put it, there is a link to the build guid in my signature.

i have a friend who was making a really tiny pc, he coulnnt fit the radiator so he basically took the back side panel off, drilled a wide hole and put the radiator outside, maybe not the best option but with the radiator he had much better thermals than with an air cooler due tothe low space

So what is the actual voltage it's running at? you probably want about 1.35V to be your daily max voltage, likely don't go past 1.4Vs for daily use.

But that noctua cooler is a pretty bad buy, only a 92mm fan and all, likely isn't much better than $25 coolers

Look for the Cryorig H5, around $50, with solid thermal mass.

Or for like $25 a Hyper T4 cooler is lower profile than a 212 evo and will work fine.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

^ Best Answer,  I can stand behind the Cryorig H5 cooler being excellent ( if it fits in your case ) haha. but they also make the H7 which I believe is a little shorter and still a decent cooler.

The H5 would be a great option if using it didn't imply cutting a large square in my acrylic panel in order for its extra 35mm to fit. Same goes for the H7, which is 145mm tall.
