7700k/1080ti

chris cooper

Hi Guys - thought I'd post my rig.

Upgraded a few months ago.   I thought I'd jump in a show you guys my rig and see what you thought.

It replaced an aging AMD FX 8370 with 2 RX 480's crossfire in.  I managed to sell these for nearly £700, which bought the 1080ti.  Just need to run the heating these days as not so much heat produced from this one.

I have just ordered another set 2x8gig ram, which will take it to 32gigs and I am currently selecting a 144hz/1440p monitor.  If you guys have any suggestions for this I would be grateful but with xmas round the corner, it may have to be somewhat budget friendly... :)  the screen tearing on my 1080p/60hz is horrific currently (managed to overclock the panel to 82hz but it has very little improvement)

I must say I am a bit disappointed with the 400c case.  It is was difficult to cable manage, very hard to get decent airflow and you have to remove both side panels to get at the front dust filter.

(It was bought when I realized I didn't have space in my old case to mount the AIO)  It was an emergency trip to Maplins, just before closing, which is on the same street that I live here in the UK)

Desk is a bit cramped, have sorted out the office/man cave yet...

Specifications are:-

CPU: Intel Core i7-7700k @ 4.8ghz | Motherboard: GIGABYTE Gaming Z270XP-SLI | Graphics Card: AORUS GeForce® GTX 1080 Ti | RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3200mz |Storage: 1 x Samsung 250GB 960 Evo PCIe NVMe | 2 x Seagate 1TB [raid1] - overflow stuff | 2 x Samsung 850 EVO 500gb [raid0] - games | PSU: Corsair CX750M | Case: Corsair 400C | Cooling: Kraken x62 AIO | 3 x Corsair AF140 | 1x Noctua NF-F12 | Sound: Soundblaster Zx

What are your thoughts on the daisy chained pci-e cable.  I used a friends FLIR camera and got just a 5 degrees delta on the cable itself...  Although have been doing some research into using it following a Jayztwocents video.

Great to hear your feedback

Chris.

What the hell are you doing with this that you require 32GB of RAM?

I do run some vms, as well as some video/photo work for work.

To be fair probably should have put the money towards a decent monitor.

if you do anything that requires 32gb of RAM the i7-7700K is very likely not the right CPU choice...

His build his money his choice.

Technically a $500 laptop can play most games.

I've got 32gb in mine but when I bought it RAM was cheap and there was like a 50 buck difference between 16gb 3400mhz kits and 32gb 2800mhz kits. So i went with more.

@OP whats your budget for a monitor? I know your overseas so pricing and selections might vary.

Also what size is your current panel, you replacing it or adding to your current for dual monitors? Helps us figure out how big to go, most 1440s are 27 inches.

My suggestion is a MG278Q.

Ive got its little 60hz brother and like it.

Its 400ish US.  Its not g sync but if your looking for gsync its probably outta budget.

As far as your pcie cable, shouldn't be a big deal. Ive got a similar cable on my Strix 1080ti and dont notice any issues.

Probably ok considering most PSUs have a cable in the box for running 1 wire up to the card with 2 ends on it.

EXACTLY. I can't think of a single photo/video use case us common PCMRs would do that would warrant spending another $200 worth of Memory on. Seriously, throwing money out the window unless Task Manager says you're over budget on memory.

I mean, take that $200 and spend it on a 240mm cooler for the GPU. Or a 120mm AIO for the CPU, buy a Kraken G12, and put the X62 on the 1080ti and get better thermal performance, boost 3.0 clock, and clock stability.

i mean there are stupid purchases, and there are TRYING WAY TOO HARD purchases. I'm not really sure which one buying 32GB of RAM falls into. Sure, fine, his build his money, whatever, but DAMN... I've talked to a coworker who's friend who bought a TR 1950X and a pair of 1080tis to play Ghost Recon: Wildlands. A $6000 TR setup where my $600 6700k system will beat it in gameplay all day long.

Probably around 500 GBP.

Ill use the current 27 inch panel for stuff whilst gaming youtube, teamspeak, discord etc

In terms of 32 gig of ram.  A friend was upgrading and i got for a good price...  he has just upgrade his x299 system an uses the same white led corsair ram i do.  He is very much high end and has more money then sense imo.

But the few comments above do nothing but highlight some of issues i have with pcmr and i have building tinkering for a good few years now.

According to amazon uk, the mg279q is in your budget, but streching another 100 gets you GSync on the PG278QR.

Your call there.

Maybe you can find a deal on the PG278QR elsewhere. Just used amazon UK to get prices in your country.
