Bottlenecking

Hello I am new and just seen the video on bottlenecking on techquicke and I was wondering if an i5 4400k, 12 gb of rams would hold back my gtx 1060's potential.

Not likely, but I'm not finding info on the i5-4400K, so I can't be certain.

Hi,

8 Gb of ram would be enough still too, so 12 Gb is just fine,

Your i5 is fine, i reccomend overclocking it though.

If your buying new, try and upgrade that cpu....

If you want to know if you're being bottleneck simply play your game with MSi Afterburner running to check your usages, if CPU is being max out but not the GPU then simply as that your CPU is bottlenecking the GPU.

It'll take a hit on some games that really hammer the CPU, like Battlefield 1. You'll also have a higher chance of hitting minimums in games with intense action going on.

 

Otherwise you should still hit least 60 FPS at 1080p on high in most titles.

And what justification do they have for saying "anything over 10% is a bottleneck"? I mean in my mind, a bottleneck is a bottleneck. What's more important is how much performance you're still getting and whether or not this still meets your needs.

 

Seriously this topic is so overblown and so fear mongering that I'm surprised manufacturer's haven't jumped on board to get everyone to buy their parts every generation. "BUY OUR NEWEST PROCESSOR (that doesn't offer anything really better than the last) BECAUSE NOW YOU'RE BOTTLENECKING!"

Which makes no sense, because very few games can use more than 8 threads. The website is BS, a 2.2Ghz Xeon isn't a better gaming CPU than a 7700K. xD

It's that some people think you can gauge performance of a multi-core part by simply doing its frequency times the number of cores and that equals a single core at that frequency. I've seen this a few times on eBay and sadly in some retailers.

depends on the game, the settings, the resolution...but in general i'd say it's a good pairing...

Until today I had a 1060 6gb with an i5 7500 and I never saw any issue. Been toying around with a 1080 for the past hour and I'm not seeing any bottlenecking so far in the games I've tried.

It will depend on the games that you play whether it requires more CPU power or GPU power.

But more probably it won't.
