Vodafone Germany announced 1Gbit LTE

My translation:

"Half a year ago we brought half gigabit speeds to our network. Now we are going to buid the first gigabit-stations. With that we're going a big step towards a 'Gigabit-Society' and Show how fast Germany can surf in the future.", Hannes Ametsreiter, the CEO of Vodafone Germany said.

 

 

 

Vodafone Germany wants to expand their current infrastructure to support 1 Gigabit LTE in four major cities in Germany:

• Berlin
• Düsseldorf
• Hannover
• Hamburg

The interesting bit is, that there are currently no phones available to even support 1 Gigabit LTE.

Apparently the newly announced Huawei Mate 10 Pro can achieve 1 Gigabit speeds.

But on the other hand this will at least push technology forwards and I like what they're doing.

 

In the article they talk about "4.5G Technologie".

Apparently they achieve those speeds by "bundeling multiple frequency bands together" and by "aligning atennas in a certain way" in the upcoming smartphone models.

 

This all sounds like gibberish to me, so maybe someone else can explain it in more detail.

Wi-Fi utilizes RF (Radio Frequency).  By my understanding, some cellular companies all ready combine frequency bands for higher output.  Of course, I am curious what bands they are using.  When cellular companies talk bands, they are using RF terminology.  Antennas also have a great affect on RF on how it is received and transmitted.

 

I'm currently studying for my Ham license, which the books for it put a whole chapter to antennas because how that one piece can greatly change on which bands you can use.

It seems a few telcos can't wait for 5g and are doing this with 4g and some other bits and pieces.

As a mobile phone user anything beyond 20Mbps is stupidly pointless. Give us cheaper contracts (as in money per GB) and better coverage. Germany is a shitfest when it comes to that. I for example pay 8 bucks for 1.25GB and some 100 minutes. In Austria you get 5Gb for that amount of money, fuck this shit, gigabit LTE is as useless to society as the new Bugatti Chiron.

Here I pay 15 bucks and I get about 180mb and 20 minutes. Straya.

Well where are you? Is your country also really fucking successful economicaly but lacking behind hugely in local comparison (with neighbours)?

It may just be that I'm picking a shitty provider, but Australia has a pretty bad reputation for networking. Our fibre optic rollout is a shitshow, and coverage is sketchy to say the least. For me at least, I can't even get coverage in my own home.

25€ and 15GB without any additional cost in the EU and of course unlimited calls and SMS.

I guess you're doing it wrong.

You also have a shitton of distance to cover because your people/square mile is a fair bit lower (I reckon 10 times or more) than ours so that is to be expected. Yes I still fell you for those prices, yes it is not enough to comfort me.

Many flagship phones support 1 Gbit/s speeds. Any Snapdragon 835 device does. Huawei's Mate 10 is the first to support 1.2 Gbit/s.

 

Customers in a gigabit network is unlikely to actually get gigabit speeds. However when the network and clients connected to it all support it, it lifts up the entire network and improves average performance.

Check out aldi mobile,  $20  for 1.5Gb and unlimited calls and sms.. Uses the telstra network so best coverage you can expect.

I should not complain at all because I have zero mobile internet at the moment. I am either at home or at the university where I both receive free wlan.

Just like even before IEEE released specs for 4G, carriers around the world scrambled to rush a wannabe 4G like LTE which is mostly 3.9G and HSPA+ which is 3.5-3.75G. The only thing that is true 4G is LTE-Advanced.

On topic, this is getting better and better every year, even where I live in a small village we have 76Mbit/s broadband and LTE coverage that nets me around 60Mbit/s approx. Only problem is the signal strength for indoor coverage on the provider I use isn't great, but TBH unless my broadband isn't working, then I wouldn't be using LTE indoors anyway

?? The $15 add on is 500Mb and unlimited calls/sms.  That's the plan I usually have unless I am expecting to need bore data in which case I up to the $20-25 deal.

 

EDIT: just realised the $25 deal is 3GB now.

Currently about 25% of New Zealand's population has access to 1Gbps for about $80 USD a month. 

 

Govt. plan is to increase this to 85% by 2024, and so far everything is on-track.
