Server Specs

I am looking at building my own private server for general useage so i can store content private material on my private network rather than a dropbox or cloud drive of some kind, can anyone recommend parts for building a server please. first time building a server.

Just file storage or do you need to run other applications on it?

Do you want it accessible outside of your local network?

Are you comfortable with Linux?

If your going on the cheap look into a used pre-built desktop add freeNAS or unRAID and a couple 4TB drives and call it a day or if your looking long term and a bigger box look into a used server grade piece from ebay guys are having great results with these units and are reasonably priced

If you have a local ecycle place near you sometimes they'll have some pretty good deals on older servers that can easily be converted to most of your needs. When it comes to actually building servers things tend to cost more than salvaging prebuilt.

you could just install owncloud on an old pc. no linux skills needed either

Then I would seriously consider looking for retired network grade servers they can be had for cheap and have all the correct hardware for a killer server such as duel cpu's and the all important (if that's your thing) ECC memory support

i would look into servers on the used market if you are comfortable with used hardware. 

these will have ECC memory support, most of them are dual socket, so you can put another cpu into it for cheap, redundant power supply's, etc. 

they will also have good RAID controllers so you can use RAID without software. 

a drawback is that parts are not cheap. if a power supply dies, you need a new one for that specific server, unless it's atx compatible. 

also, make sure you have a spare room or something to store it in, or a place where noise is irrelevant.  because proper servers are LOUD. 

and dual socket servers use a lot of power when in heavy workloads. about 300 - 400 watts usually. more if you fill it with drives. 

if that matters to you, use something else that's more power efficient.
