Try not to be this kind of photographer/photography

I completly Disagree with Akira. This stuff is just dumb.

They did NOT break any laws.

What they did do was be stupid.

Is this cause for mutilating an entire local economy? no. This is an over-reaction that will cause far more harm than good.

I'm presonally all about freedom of expression. If nothing they did was against the law and all they did was hurt your itty bitty feelings then that's all good by me. You can come to my home country, or any other country realy, and preach whatever you want and do whatever you want within the confines of the local law. If you're disrespectful in the process that's too bad, that just makes you a bit of an asshole nothing less and nothing more. If Someone from Greece was to come to America for example and start disrespecting locals. I think we can all agree banning Greek locals from tourism would be an over-reaction.

Everyone should have the ability to be disrespectful, crude or brash, if they are within the confines of the law. Anything less is limiting freespeach and personal power. If you want Photography industry to be taken more seriously stop worring about such small tiny issues.

No one is arguing against freedom of expression here. however:

1. The church is a non government organisation, if they want to decline officiating weddings based on whatever characteristic, they are welcome to do so, just as a photographer is welcome to say, I'm not taking that picture, if you don't like it, find someone else and the couple is welcome to go find someone else. In fact, to argue against this, is stampeding the freedom of expression the church should enjoy, and the exact reason why your first amendment reads: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech".

2. There are indecent exposure laws that I could see being violated if this was on a public area, if not, then it is up to the owner of the area, in this case the monastery to decide what they allow on the premises and how they will react in the event someone oversteps. Artistic expression is what kept pornography legal in the US, filming an adult movie in a public park is still not allowed, and I can surely deny you doing it in private property.

3. The crippling of the local economy is another thing, the locals are welcome to balance their need to uphold their beliefs and demand others respect them vs. the loss of having less tourism because of this decision, and if people do want to get married in the Greek isles, we have tons, its a 30 minute ferry boat away.

4. The local government is welcome to address its grievances as it sees fit, and if a majority of the dwellers of the isle believe that is a reasonable response it is well within their right to do it. Their action will then be critisised and thats that.

These are all very important issues, but whats more is that this is a very poor execution, of a imo vulgar image, that has been done to death in the past 6 months-year, giving that image a 5/10 would be too generous, and that is not because of what it depicts. The fact that the photographer and the couple decided to disrespect the venue on a whim reveals they are stupid.

I have nothing against doing this sort of photography (hell, I'll shoot a Dolcett themed photo if I feel like it, but do it either in the privacy of your own home/hotel room, whatever or somewhere you can get permission to do so or somewhere that doesn't suggest you are disrespecting the locals.

Don't punish a lot of people based on what one person does.

But also, show respect to other people/cultures/laws.
