'Fixing' a weird ZFS

Go to solution Solved by brwainer,

Assuming that no other drives die while resilvering, then yes you can do this

EDIT: because another drive might die, best to have a recent backup

A friend of mine has a weird zfs setup that he'd like fixed...

Elementary OS

RaidZ1

4tb

4tb

4tb

4tb (2x2tb HW RAID)

My question is, can I fail out the 2x2TB one and rebuild with a proper 4tb drive in it's place without any data loss?

@Nymmie

Agreed - assuming those 4TB drives are newer, and in good condition (check the SMART stats on all 3 drives), the risk of failure is very small. But the risk still exists, so make sure to backup anything you simply cannot replace.

For example, if the array had movie files that you can re-rip or re-download? I'd personally take the risk and not do a backup. But if they contained irreplaceable pictures, documents, etc, then I would ensure anything irreplaceable is backed up.
