• A post on Chris’s Security and Tech Blog has revealed that OnePlus is collecting a lot of user data- tied to the phone’s serial number,namely:

  • When the screen is locked/unlocked

  • the phone’s IMEI(s), phone numbers, MAC addresses, mobile network(s) names and IMSI prefixes, as well as my wireless network ESSID and BSSID

  • timestamp ranges of the when (and which) applications on the phone are opened and closed.

  • timestamps of which activities were fired up in which in applications

• The code responsible for this data collection is part of the OnePlus Device Manager

• There is a way to remove the OnePlus Device Manager app via adb, without requiring root.

• Last week, a story went viral that claimed Apple was intentionally slowing down older iPhones to push people to buy its latest models.

• The claim was based on data which shows Google searches for "iPhone slow" spiking dramatically with the release of each new model.

• Fortunately, Futuremark has heaps of data from seven different iPhone models across three different versions of iOS.

• Results: The data shows that Apple actually does a good job of supporting its older devices with regular updates that maintain a consistent level of performance across iOS versions.

• Why then do people report slow down?

  • An update might add new features that use more resources or require more processing power.

  • New apps developed for the latest models might not run as smoothly on older devices.

  • Apps designed for an earlier version of iOS might not take full advantage of optimizations in the latest version.

• Airbnb and Newgard Development Group are collaborating with new apartment buildings optimized for home sharing.

• The first project, a 324 unit building in Kissimmee, Florida, will be branded as “Niido Powered by Airbnb.”

• The project is considered the first in a series of developments across the Southeastern United States

• Airbnb and Niido will work together to design new units and buildings that include features like keyless entry and shared common spaces that make them optimal for home sharing.

• Niido will fully support the costs of construction and retain full ownership of the buildings.

• Niido tenants will sign annual leases and will be permitted to homeshare individual rooms or their entire units through Airbnb for up to 180 nights per year.

• Tenants who choose to share their homes will be part of Airbnb’s Friendly Buildings Program, in which hosts and landlords share revenues generated from home sharing.

• Niido tenants will have access to a new app fully integrated with Airbnb.

  • The App will enable tenants to manage guest stays remotely by triggering services provided by a “MasterHost” at each property who will assist with items like guest check-in, cleaning and linen service.

• The partnership also has the potential to help tenants who may spend disproportionate amounts of their household incomes on rent.

iOS and Samsung market share now tied in the US

• Based on new data from Kantar Wordpanel, which tracks smartphone market share by way of sales data iOS and Samsung’s U.S. market share is now nearly tied:

  • iOS is up 3.7 percentage points year-over-year, to achieve 35 percent market share,

  • Samsung grew 0.8 points, reaching a 35.2 percent share.

 

• Android is still far ahead in the U.S.:

  • 63.2% share to iOS’s 35%

• iPhones account for nearly 50 percent of Verizon phones

• Samsung dominates in Great Britain with 38.4%

• In urban China:

  • iOS also grown from 13.4% market share last year to 17.7% thanks to iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus sales — the top two bestsellers in urban China.

  • Huawei continues to lead with a 31.1% share

  • BBK Electronics, the owners of the Oppo and Vivo brands, is No. 2, with a 19.7% share

• A security researcher has discovered secret hard-coded backdoor accounts in thermal security cameras manufactured by FLIR Systems.

• The accounts "are never exposed to the end-user and cannot be changed through any normal operation of the camera."

• Certain now-publically username-password combos will grant an attacker access over the device.

• Other vulnerabilities:

  • Stream Disclosure — attackers can access the security camera's stream without needing to authenticate.

  • Remote Root Exploit — attackers can execute code on vulnerable cameras with root privileges.

  • Authenticated OS Command Injection — attackers with access to limited accounts can inject commands and have them executed with root privileges.

  • Multiple Information Disclosures — attackers can access/query certain camera files and read other local resources.

• The researcher reported the vulnerabilities to FLIR, but has not received a response regarding the issues.

• The easiest way for FLIR customers can protect themselves is to prevent access to their cameras from the Internet by placing the devices behind a firewall until the vendor issues a patch.

When using Windows 10, I've found that it demands so much disk usage that having it installed on an SSD is the only remedy to the laggy interface. Otherwise, everything is "slow as molasses" as Linus puts it.

Then usually there are some settings to be changed or plain a little system maintenance. 

 

For the start menu for example disable all the tips that are loading from the internet, a no brainer when those are active that the response takes a few seconds, because looking up the ms server, connect, load information to show, etc... then finally popping up. 

 

Then as well after a bigger update of windows always run the disk cleanup with system files enabled to get rid of the update packs stored on your device, may take some time but helps. 

 

For using non SSD as system disks, get a decent defrag tool like the one from O&O and run it using mode "Access" ... While I was still on Win 7, I did that frequently and the boot times could compare to an installation on a SSD.

 

Treat your system well, and it will behave well =) as long as you know what you do.

For apple slowing devices down, it is not about CPU and GPU performance, it is about poor optimization or an intentionally bad code path.

 

During the sluggish performance, there is ample free RAM, and hardly any CPU usage, and hardly any NAND IOs, things are just running slow with no apparent bottlenecks.

 

The same happened with windows vista. Install it on even a modern system and it will feel sluggish even though there is barely any CPU usage, and hardly any disk IO usage. Even under process explorer, there is no thread using 1 core worth of CPU time (thus you can't even think that it is that weird behavior when the scheduler is constantly having a single thread switch cores.

 

I am not good enough at programming to understand the true reason behind sluggish experiences like this, but it happened with windows vista and windows ME in the past.

It has also happened on some unstable android ROMs where the CPU usage is low, ample free RAM, very little NAND activity, but things are slow.

 

PS, the NAND on the iphone 6s is pretty close to that of a mid range SATA SSD, it should not be having such an extreme slowdown through tasks needing more IOs, especially when it comes to UI responsiveness issues. Furthermore, you end up with updates causing almost the same slowness on both the iphone 6 and 6s, even though the NAND on the 6s is nearly 3 times as fast.

This is correct. Not only that, iPhones use paging to supplement their iPhones RAM capacity, being that NAND flash is pretty fast compared to traditional Hard Drives it is generally a good idea, however, people who use up a lot of space will experience slowdowns as a result: due to the multitasking and background services quite a lot is kept in the page file. 

 

As for the article is is 100% correct. Apple does this by traditionally down-clocking their processors upon sale and gradually overclocking the models upon an update. With the introduction we also see numerous GPU optimisations.
