Pcie 1x 16x riser cable vs 16x onboard Performance?

Boochik

Hi,

im using on 1 gtx 1070 and 3 gtx 1060 for mining but i want to add 2 more gtx 1070 for sli to play games when i time(dont get lot time, sometime sunday busy too)

im using 1x to 16x riser cable at that time,

this one

https://www.amazon.in/dp/B072HJ3379/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_hmf4zbNQZEVMM

does this converter impact performance?

if yes then which should i buy? (I request you to please suggest me according to indian sites like amazon.in)

The converter itself won't but running through PCIe 1x sure will.  How much though depends strongly on the game.  Some will see surprisingly little if any change, others, as you might expect, will see a significant hit to performance.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

X1 will probably significantly impact performance, perhaps as much as 25-30%

From GamersNexus

https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2488-pci-e-3-x8-vs-x16-performance-impact-on-gpus

PCI Express Theoretical Max Bandwidth

The theoretical maximum bandwidth of PCI-e 3.0 is 8GT/s, or nearly 1GB/s per lane:

  PCI-e 1.0 PCI-e 2.x PCI-e 3.0 PCI-e 4.x
x1 250MB/s 500MB/s 985MB/s 1969MB/s
x4 1000MB/s 2000MB/s 3940MB/s 7876MB/s
x8 2000MB/s 4000MB/s 7880MB/s 15752MB/s
x16 4000MB/s 8000MB/s 15760MB/s 31504MB/s

So using PCI-E 3.0 x1 is like using PCI-E 1.0 x4..... I'm pretty sure thats a bottleneck. 3.0 x4 or x8 would theoretically be fine though.

Omg thats so disappointing, which should i buy then? Is there any 16x available like usb thing like riser cable which im using sorry im not expert like you guys.(please consider only according to indian website like amazon.in )

i just saw wide wire of 16x but its so expensive and i heard that long lenght is equal to less performance.

you can SLI on x1 lanes actually and performance will be fine but not loading times. However you will need an SLI bridge.

I used to play batman at 1080p on a GTX 580 i attached to my laptop  before which ran at pcie x1 1.1 and i got pretty good performance as long as a screen was attached to the GPU. Due to the PCIe link i could not use my onboard nvidia GPU for physx but the GTX 580 ran the game well at that resolution at high settings with physx on the same GPU.

You can definitely run at x1, linus also has proven that cable length doesnt affect performance and ran the game benchmarks to prove it. Games use the GPU as an output device rather than intermediary device. So go ahead and grab yourself a couple of x1 to x16 risers that are good quality (you dont wanna blow a hole in your GPUs by poor soldering and quality), make sure you have a screen attached to them and use an SLI bridge.

I have also played some games using CF, 2 HD 7970s, 1 CF bridge and x8 for the first GPU, x4 for the 2nd GPU and i still gained an almost double fps increase for games that supported CF. That CF/SLI bridge does wonders to increase SLI/CF performance.

Thanks to all for help,

what if i use 2 pcie 16x wide cable —> https://www.amazon.in/dp/B075HLSTZ3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_N0p4zb0MW4ZX7

One on each for gtx 1070(obviously sli bridge)

and rest keep other gtx 1060 on pcie 1x to 16x usb cable.

Would that setup safe?

Actually im using this machine for mining but i cannot lose old habit of gaming especially gta online. 98% mining 2% gaming ( if i got time on sunday)

so is that idea safe?

Thanks, this really shows what I was saying.

Some games really don't care at all what link speed you have

Spoiler

deusex_3840_2160.png.39ce16727aa63a3653014237a6acff98.png

Meanwhile others can see performance cut to less than half when using PCIe 1x (note that PCIe 1.1 x4 basically has the same bandwidth as PCIe 3.0 1x so taht's what you'd be looking at here)

Spoiler

Still some will see performance hold up pretty well in all situations except this most extreme one:

Spoiler

And of course the rest fit in somewhere in between.

This should work. Mining doesn't need a lot of pcie bandwidth so I think this is what you really want.

I have a doubt, in the link which i gave,

I saw in the description it is written that “it prvides 1x speed” what does that mean, if it provides 1x speed why it is 16x extender, why dont people use usb one.

+ it looks cool.

Yeah that seems a bit... weird...

I would assume they made it x16 so you can physically plug it into x16 slots? Or just as a way to trick people who don't read close enough...

Update,

after 23 days, extention cable reached, its really premium, this one, http://s.aliexpress.com/iE7VVRvM

now i want to order pcie 8x, if i order same quality again i need to pay 4000inr

want to save money this time if possible,

does 8x require good quality also? Can prefer any cable? Which is good price and  fine quality.
