Using any computer as a eGPU for MacBook Pro

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Most aftermarket hardware is technically incompatible with OS X, and I believe TB operates under the assumption of a host device (MacBook Pro), and a slave device (eGPU dock). A mainboard would be assigned as a host.

Apple actually just added support for eGPUs and earlier added 1000 series support. But you need a docking station not another computer

Nope.. Tb3 docks require special 'device host' hardware from Intel, and that's why they're all so goddamn expensive

How do eGPU boxes run then?

Would a thunderbolt bridge work with a hackintosh build?

eGPUs are slave devices. Little more than a PSU, PCIe x4 connection, and a slave TB controller.

And still, no. At that point, why not just use the desktop as just that?

I want to make a NAS like system, for media storage, but would be neat this device to act as a eGPU for my MacBook.

It would only be possible if an OEM designed a system/mainboard to specifically do that.

But you can use UNRaid to create a NAS and run an OS under a KVM.

No, you can't use thunderbolt (pcie) backwards to request access to another computer's expansion cards.

No idea if it works on OSX but steam in home streaming? Your desktop runs the game and send the video and audio to the client

What game? Who was talking about gaming at all?

generally that's the reason why an egpu would be required
