Social rights movement essay

IKnight

Hey folks, I'm going to be writing a short (700 word) essay on a social movement of my choice. I want to do something with tech and was considering the Free Software Movement.

Anybody know of any other social movements connected to tech that might be fun to write about?

There's the AI rights advocates. While it's not much a movement yet, the question will probably only become more important as the years progress.

You could also look into the trans-humanism movement.

It's not really a social movement. It's more just set of laws.

I need something that has a bit more concrete info about its effects on government and such. Maybe this will become a greater topic 10/20 years fron now.

Yeah, that's what I've been checking out, and the whole GNU project seems really interesting. I originally wanted to do it about Linux, but the essay has to be more 'how did x social movement impact the government, laws/legislation?' so that's kinda been eliminated.

I'll try and see how I can connect it the (for example) US government. I've also been thinking about the Silk Road and DPR (Ulbricht).

Another interesting topic is block chain (bitcoin etc.) and how it can impact society

Would recommend reading stuff posted online by Naval Ravikant if you want a pro-block chain point of view

Linux has a big impact on governments in the sense that some countries or cities adopted linux distributions for their IT needs.

But I guess that's kinda stretching the topic a little bit.

I have watched a TED talk on youtube about people who fight against discrimination in algorithms. This is also a movement and has even created a few jobs because SJWs are big in Germany

Maybe this would be of interest to you?
