From an analog point of view, you can get a voltage controlled current source so that the audio signal affects the amount of current going to the LEDs.

 

From a digital point of view, you can set up the LED brightness on a PWM and use the PCM value of an audio signal to adjust the duty cycle.

they must use addressable LEDS of some kind and have a good software to control it.

 

you are looking for ws2812b or ws2813 LED´s paired with some arduino microcontroller to give them their signals.

MATERIALS

- You can buy led strips with addressable leds that are only 4 mm (0.16 inches) wide

- Buy an appropriate led strip controller from ebay or make your own with an cheap Chinese arduino copy as i did with my diy rgbw power supply shroud.

 

BUILD

- You can use an acrylic sheet of the same thickness (or thicker) as the width of the led strip, that is 4 mm (or more). 

- Cut the acrylic to desired shape.

- Sand the surface of the acrylic so that it is matte (for diffusing the light).

- Attach the led strips to the end of the acrylic sheets so that they shine into the acrylic sheets from the edges.

- Cover the led strips with something so that they are not seen and so that the edges of the acrylic sheets look nicer.
