OnePlus collects users data - a lot of data[UPDATE]

JuztBe

[UPDATE]

OnePlus CEO commented on the issue.

Quote

The reason we collect some device information is to better provide after-sales support.

Seems like a pesky excuse for collecting phone numbers.

Quote

At any time, users can opt-out of usage analytics collection by navigating to 'Settings' -> 'Advanced' -> 'Join user experience program'.

By the end of October, all OnePlus phones running OxygenOS will have a prompt in the setup wizard that asks users if they want to join our user experience program.

Based on this "Join user experience program" is turned on by default. It's quite a name for a spying toggle

Quote

We would also like to share we will no longer be collecting telephone numbers, MAC Addresses and WiFi information.

It seems shitstorm was big enough. This by no means justifies how OnePlus handled analytics to this point, but at least things are being changed, other companies could've simply ignored it.
Sadly things that burn their ass is being changed, not what users are asking for months ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[ORIGINAL POST]

It seems OnePlus is collecting quite a bit of information about their users. This problem is related to OxygenOS, not only OP2 mentioned in blog post. Reddit users are reporting seeing conections to "open.oneplus.net" from other OnePlus devices as well.

Quote

These event data contain timestamps of which activities were fired up in which in applications, again stamped with the phone’s serial number.

Quote

Amongst other things, this time we have the phone’s IMEI(s), phone numbers, MAC addresses, mobile network(s) names and IMSI prefixes, as well as my wireless network ESSID and BSSID and, of course, the phone’s serial number. Wow, that’s quite a bit of information about my device, even more of which can be tied directly back to me by OnePlus and other entities.

Quote

Those are timestamp ranges (again, unix epoch in milliseconds) of the when I opened and closed applications on my phone. From this data we can see that on Tuesday, 10th Jan 2017, I had Slack open between 20:25:40 UTC and 20:25:52 UTC, and the Microsoft Outlook app open between 21:38:41 UTC and 21:38:53 UTC, to take just two examples, again stamped with my phone’s serial number.

Unfortunately, as a system service, there doesn’t appear to be any way of permanently disabling this data collection or removing this functionality without rooting the phone. One alternative would be to stop the service every time you boot your phone (assuming it doesn’t get periodically restarted) or using an app to achieve the same effect, or perhaps prevent communication with open.oneplus.net somehow.

Regarding last quote there are farily few apps which can block communication with certain domains. You can remove it with ADB as well. It's first thing I'm going to do after coming back home.

My personal opinion of OnePlus has dropped even more. After many months of ignoring community on most requested software features we get this.

Oh come on. I wanted to like OnePlus but I guess they're worse than Apple and possibly Google.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

I wonder if this was a pilot for Oppo to roll it out to their other devices (I know Oppo claims not to be involved with oneplus but as the only shareholder, I still think it is a possibility) /tinfoilhat

That's it, every time from this point onwards someone I know shows off a new china-company-based phone I'm going to say the word "sigh".

Tbh, Not exactly a lot of choices if one wants a high performing device on the cheap. Prices of more mainstream brands are getting quite high. :(

Well that really sucks. Just wow like some companies think it won't get known with time or they just don't care.

My personal opinion of OnePlus has dropped even more. After many months of ignoring community on most requested software features we get this.

If it’s anonymized telemetry data, then there shouldn’t be a problem since a lot of companies do telemetry since they’re actually using the depersonalized and anonymized data for the improvement of their devices. It would be bad if there’s no option to disable telemetry just like Windows 10 and/or the telemetry data they collect contains identifiable personal information just like Microsoft’s spyware named Windows 10.

There is more that meets the eye
I see the soul that is inside

If it’s anonymized telemetry data, then there shouldn’t be a problem since a lot of companies do telemetry sunce they’re actually using the depersonalized and anonymized data for the improvement of their devices. It would be bad if there’s no option to disable telemetry just like Windows 10 and/or the telemetry data they collect contains identifiable personal information just like Microsoft’s spyware named Windows 10.

Story is still unfolding, but there's no way to disable with UI afaik. You have to be somewhat techy to do it.
And well it's not really anonymous, your phone's IMEI and MAC is being sent too, which is most definitely not required for anonymous telemetry. You could trace it back with those stats.

b-b-b-but it's just telemetry, how is one plus supposed to know how improve the device without that telemetry?

Privacy doesn't exist on the internet, if you want privacy disconnect

If you need privacy it's only because you're doing something wrong

Hmm... Are MAC addresses supposed to be private unlike IP addresses? I think OEMs have a record of IMEI but I can see how this can be a concern since it can be used to block access to a phone. But I think at the moment users of OnePlus should keep the tin foil hat in the shelf, calm down, and wait as the story unfolds and until OnePlus responds.

If you care about privacy and haven't installed a custom ROM on your phone yet, then there's is no hope for you.

Oh come on. I wanted to like OnePlus but I guess they're worse than Apple and possibly Google.

Just to say for everyone, you should really use Google's data viewer webpage and see what google is actually tracking about you. Because i was shocked that they actually did the same thing with tracking what apps were opened when, for how long and all sorts of other data on interactions. Similarly the voice features have all your queries going back as far as youve used it.

The downside is that disabling the history on these things (search/maps/voice) disable quite a few very nice features in different google services that seemingly shouldnt be disabled. Such as disabling the maps history will mean that it wont give me my daily drive to work estimate in google now, despite my office being marked as work and having nothing to do with my history. Or disabling voice history also disables the "OK Google" command. Even though ive had a few instances where we were discussing topics and when i went to search something related to it, auto complete had my question as the first result. Somehow i doubt when i type "Smok" the auto complete would fill in "smokey tuna dip recipe" unless it was listening in on the discussion we were having.

TL;DR: Google is as bad if not far worse, and no one is paying attention to it even though they put it all out there in the open.

Still leaves the question of why they wanted to collect it in the first place, still your right in that we will need to wait for a response (But lets be honest, if no one noticed, they would have easily kept doing whatever they were doing.)

One of the reasons I use custom ROMS when I got Android phones.

When I bought my OP3 last summer I just booted it up to see that it worked and then I flashed it with a custom ROM.

WS: 13900K - 128GB - 6.5TB SSD - RTX 3090 24GB - 42" LG OLED C2  - W11 Pro
LAPTOP: Lenovo Gaming 3 - 8GB - 512GB SSD - GTX 1650

NAS 1: HP MicroServer Gen8 - 32TB - FreeNAS

NAS 2: 10400F - 44TB - FreeNAS

You can buy an 32GB iPhone SE for $200

You can get an android phone with 64 GB of storage, an SD821 and far, far better battery life for the same price. I have such a phone myself, albeit, with a custom ROM.

Actually not sure about mac. Someone with more knowledge may know.
Though from quote you can see that phone serial and even some kind of phone numbers are being sent.

Fair point. It's just that constant updates is nice(or was, after OP5 it's not really happening often anymore).

Not too sure, I just go straight for a clean install to avoid any issues, but some apps sync with google, you may need to look further into it. I would recommend looking at https://forum.xda-developers.com/
