Intel with VEGA graphics?! Debunked

NumLock21
Go to solution Solved by Fetzie,

Maybe not this time :)

http://www.tech-critter.com/2017/10/alleged-image-of-intel-chip-with-vega.html?m=1

Apparently somebody who works there is called Vega, and they won an employee of the month style award.

Quote

This slide presents a different story, which is that Intel may indeed be working with AMD and using RTG graphics technologies on their upcoming mobility GPUs. The slide is for mobile CPUs so we can expect a new series of mobile processors from Intel.

Leak picture showing Intel with the possibility of using RTG's VEGA graphics. No other info on that picture or when this might happen. Coffee Lake, Tiger Lake, Ice Lake, Cannon Lake?

Update

There will be no intel cpu with vega graphics. Now let's meet Intel's employee of the month for the mobile division, Mr. Vega!

Intel doesn't really care.

As far as Intel is concerned using AMD graphics can prop up their CPUs and burry AMDs CPUs. It could be a better investment for Intel than you realise.

No seriously why "leak" pictures are always blurry, low resolution, and misaligned. My brick Nokia phone from 2008 has a better camera than this.

It's a project for Apple, more than likely. Intel just doesn't do GPUs too well and AMD is the iGPU kings. There's been a lot of rumors about it for months now, but it far more likely, if it eventually happens, to be some hybrid package setup for Apple laptops. At least until Apple's own GPU division is fully established. (They're building out a massive graphics group in Austin, TX right now.)

Apple's upcoming iMac pro's list vega 56 and vega 64, they aren't sticking that into a xeon or core i9 with their cooling solution (any cooling solution actually lmao), maybe for unannounced macbook?

Right. The iMac Pros are 5k or higher systems. That's a dedicated GPU.

The problem with most of what Apple is doing in the laptop space is that the Intel iGPU holds back a lot of things. This is why Bulldozer was so bad for AMD. The iGPU from GCN are really good, but they were crippled by the Dozer cores. However, while that changes with Raven Ridge here very soon, it doesn't change that Apple probably has an Intel contract that runs for years. Intel can't fix the iGPU problem, so Apple has the money for a semi-custom solution.

That solution? An Intel mobile CPU with a disable GPU put on an interposer with a 16 CU Vega design. GCN is extremely efficient at low power, so it can fit well within Apple's power budget. Apple controls all of its own drivers, so they designs don't really have to communicate with each other. It's pretty much just the Raven Ridge Vega design, anyway, but on separate silicon.

If I was Apple, that's what I'd do. I get to improve my Laptops and what it costs me is putting designs on an interposer. Their Intel CPUs are likely, already, slightly custom anyway.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro

If you scroll down to the 4th Gen, you'll notice to run the Touch-Bar, they require a mobile Radeon solution. It'd save Apple money to be able to put the solution on-package. (Space is important for those types of laptops.) If they want to go further that direction, they need more GPU power. Easiest way to get that to make the CPU package bigger with an on-package GPU solution.

This doesn't mean it's actually happening, but if I was Apple, I would look to do that.

I'm just curious, how much is Intel really investing in designing iGPUs?
The fact they have always been low end, makes me think 'Barely', and if given a good reason to outsource or use some other companies' GPU they might, even if that GPU comes from a competitor of another market.
- Like if Intel was interested in being the CPU designer for the next generation of Consoles, the volume of Consoles would probably be worth it to them, even if they have to partner with AMD, to get the GPU in the same Chip.
