Mesh Network tracking: Future of home security?

Origin Wireless has created a series of new algorithms that can be applied to their existing Mesh Networks which would allow for them to supposedly detect someone breathing in a room.  Essentially, they are using the resistance to propagation of your wireless signal to map out the room and scanning at 50 times per a second they were able to detect any motion to within 2 cm.

In a typical networking setup, latency and bouncing of signals is generally bad. Slower connections and lower signal strength are undesirable for regular use. However, Origin Wireless exploits the properties of electromagnetic propagation delay to reverse the path each signal has taken. Given enough data points and after some complex algorithms are run, rooms can be mapped quite effectively.


Even though GPS are quickly becoming more accurate outdoors, indoor location tracking is still somewhat of a challenge. Adding precise indoor locations to emergency phone calls could be greatly beneficial. It is possible for existing mesh networking systems to receive a firmware update that could implement all of the new features Origin Wireless has created.

A "Time Reversal Machine" setup consists of at least two hubs: one router is designated as an "Origin" transmitter, with the remaining routers acting as "Bot" receivers. Unlike the conceptually-similar Xandem which uses a 2.4 GHz signal, the Origin and Bot devices operate on 5 GHz over 802.11a, 802.11n or 802.11ac; and to avoid interference, the signal relies on CSI (channel state information) which is usually only used during mesh network configuration.

 

Due to the reflective nature of electromagnetic waves, a Wi-Fi signal would end up with over 500 multi-paths by the time it hits the "Bot" side, and they would arrive at different times as well. Normally, these multi-paths would be considered as the "enemies" of signal processing, but Origin Wireless took a different perspective and realized how much these signals could tell about the environment -- more so than laser-based detectors, according to the company.

 

In a nutshell, the delay between these multi-paths is the magical property that defines the state of a room: if something moves, the multi-paths will obviously change and so will the delay. Origin Wireless' software scans for such changes 50 times per second, and with a bit of calculation across delays plus machine learning, it can detect any motion with an impressive accuracy of 1 to 2 cm. Hence the "Time Reversal Machine" name.

This seems like a really neat use of mapping out the rooms using existing technology, however I would still be leery of the security aspect of the Mesh Network and how it could potentially be accessed/logged...  On a business side, it would be useful in places like a big box store to keep track of motion throughout the whole store and potentially to better improve the flow of traffic inside of buildings.

Was thinking the same thing first reading the article...  While the technology by itself would not appear to be able to tell who is in a building (unless they can create a breathing biometric fingerprint), when combined with other existing devices, it could be fairly invasive.  Would be interesting (if not additionally NSA/CIA worthy) if they could not only measure breathing, but use that to calculate what a person is saying.
