iPhone 8 beats the Galaxy S8 in battery life

According to this video:

The iPhone 8 beats the Galaxy S8 in a battery test which I find to be very interesting. The iPhone 8 is running the worst iOS release in recent history and it still managed to beat the S8 which has a significantly larger battery than the iPhone 8. Keep in mind this isn't even the iPhone 8 Plus which has an even bigger battery and would outlast the S8 for even longer than the iPhone 8. 

 

So keep this in mind if you are going to get a new phone and battery life is important to you.

I'd imagine part of this is that the iPhone 8 has a smaller 750p display powered by a potentially more efficient GPU while the S8 has a 1440p display (More pixels due to aspect ratio) and a larger display. Not saying that this is all that is going on but this would still be a major factor.

Video playback by about 24min and the GFX T-Rex battery benchmark with double the performance.

The biggest factor is the A11 Bionic. The Snapdragon 835 in all the new Android flagships is pretty piss poor in comparison in both pure performance and efficiency. 

 

Also iOS. Even iOS 11 (the worst release to date imo) is >> Android anything in terms of battery management. 

 

I'm assuming thats why Linus ditched the Galaxy S8 and says the iPhone 8 is his favorite phone now.

If they were driving the same video I don't think it would impact much despite resolution differences.

They were. Both files were 720p and lets not forget the S8 has its resolution scaled to 1080p out of the box. Even though that doesnt change the number of pixels in the display its still something to remember. It proves that battery performance is an issue on these new flagships that want to put in tons of pixels for literally no real benefit unless you use your phone for VR anything.

Definitely so but that still doesn't change the role of the display.

Not on the load of the SOC sure, but the displays will still consume different amounts of power when taking in account size and resolution (Higher res screens still consume more power even if the content is of lower quality)

That would help save more power for sure.

I could benefit from my reading as I can see the pixels from my phone which is a 1080p 5.5in screen, but I got slightly more sensitive eyes compared to some

My perfect phone would probably be a essential ph1 body, iphone X quality camera, Android 8 and iPhone optimization with the Snapdragon 835 or the A11 Bionic (whatever is better without optimization)

I call bull. I had to read Antigone (shakespearean style plays suck) on my iPhone 6s Plus and it was a little farther than my forearm length away and I couldn't see anything other than smooth text!

I hate to say it, but I'm one of those guys who can actually tell 1080p from 1440p.

 

Especially if it's using a PenTile matrix. If it's RGB, it's a little harder.

 

TBH, color me unsurprised. iOS devices have historically squeezed a lot of runtime out of fewer mAhs. While my Note8 would last north of 7 hours of SOT with around 20 hours of overall uptime, an iPhone 7 Plus (perhaps even the 8 Plus) can stretch that slightly further, and maybe even reach into the second day with more than enough juice to spare on a lighter use case, and that is with a smaller battery.

I call not bull? Not all eyes are the same for one, and two, if I stare at a letter, I see the jagged edges (And yes, I read at forearm length)

I wonder if it’s Apple upscaling then (since iPhones are not rendering images at their screens resolution but are higher and are scaled down to fit.

That can help to a degree as in certain scenarios, upscaling looks crisper than antialiasing but that would be mostly for objects ( and potentially text, but that may depend on a developer's implementation if they have the ability to chose). Still may just be my sensitive eyes

I still doubt that. I have a dead pixel in the upper left of my 6s Plus and I can see it but only because it’s off and doesn’t work. Once a pixel is surrounded at 401ppi, and then smoothed out, at half an arms length away, I don’t think you can see the pixels unless they are dead. 

 

I’d be interested in hearing what you can see if you go look at a friends plus model iPhone.

I'm not going to say that at a glance I see the pixels but when I focus on the words, whether from a reading a book or the system UI, I can still notice the rigidness of the text. This rigidness isn't to the point of annoyance but still something that I could notice even at a forearms length.

I may need to make a friend with a Plus model iPhone then . I may get a decent chance next time I see my father. Once I do, I could say whether or not there is a difference and if the upscaling is noticeable to me.

If battery life were the biggest factor, I'd choose neither the S8 or the IP8. That honors would go to the Moto Z, with its 5K mAh battery, and absurdly efficient SD625. Easy 3 day battery life.

It's not really 5000mAh though. It's smaller because you lose efficiency as it basically charges the device. It's more like 4000-ish.

 

That said, Z Play lasts absurdly long even on its 3500mAh pack. Makes me sad that they decided to make the Z2 Play's battery smaller.
