You have $250 to upgrade this machine. What do you do?

HTiLewis

Hey guys,

The mission: Use $250 to get the most upgrades/renovate this machine.

The Subject: P9X79, 3820, 670, 8gb 1333 kingston ram, 128gb ssd, soon to be seasonic 860 PSU, asetek 120mm AIO water cooler, SP120 fans (7), all wrapped in a fractal XL R2.

Goal: Use the money to get best bang for the buck with as much style as possible.

I have gotten the new PSU because I believe the current one I have is causing issues, although the motherboard could also be the culprit, but don't let that sway your suggestions. If the motherboard ends up still causing issues, I'll obviously replace that first, but I'll know in a few days when it gets here.

Thanks and good luck on your mission!

Either grab another SSD and put them in raid 0 or try your luck getting another 670 within that budget. I got one myself and I'd love to hear how it scales if you get another one  ^_^

If you need more power in gaming or gpu assisted rendering get another 670. If not, take a gander at your peripherals and see if there's anything that can be improved.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

Another 670 seems to be people's main recommendation. That is also what I recommend doing. And as @7omRavenclaw said, that's not much storage, and 500GB or 1TB HDDs are only $40-$50 USD these days.

Sell the GPU, get a nice 780 or r9 290. If you want bang for the buck you can add another 670 but its best to get a newer and single GPU. Nothing else you buy will affect gaming performance IMO.

I'd also try to find a 670 on Ebay ;) for the rest, I can't think of something which would dramatically change something on your current build for 250$ :)

Thanks and good luck on your mission!

I know a lot of people have recommended an SLI upgrade, but honestly I would advise against that.  I have a single 680 and the 2GB VRAM buffer is very close to being the limiting factor of my build at 1600p.  If you are playing at greater than 1080p, I would suggest a full GPU upgrade, not an SLI.  With the new higher VRAM buffer of console games, I belive games will be writen to load more higher res textures on the GPU and this will cross over to PC graphics cards.  2GB is quickly becoming to little for higher end GPUs.
