iPhone 8 has wireless charging problems

11 hours ago, Jrock said:

Considering everything else apple is proprietary they COULD have developed something that works. And better than any standard in other phones...

Not in this case.

Wireless charging is something it makes sense to not do differently from the rest. Imagine going to a restaurant with wireless chargers built into their tables. You don’t want owners agonising over whether to support wireless charging for iPhones or android phones. You want a common standard which supports both.

I guess what people can do is turn on do not disturb mode at night, so disable incoming notifications and vibrations.

Apple isn't above using their own standards when they're better though -- just look at lightning vs. Micro-USB.

There's always quick charging...oh, wait.

Rip your slow AF bundled charger, iPhone users.

I hope your joking. 100% efficiency or even close to that is impossible with em based wireless charging. The 60-70% efficiency is already close to what is theoretically feasible with a perfect system. Any time you couple energy from one medium to another there will always be significant loss.

impossible for anyone else. Not Apple.

Those things are mutually exclusive.  Come on people, let's not think in absolutes.  Yes, sometimes they're first, bu sometimes they're dreadfully behind.  And sometimes they do it right, but sometimes, even when they wait, there's issues.

wish things were as simple as you said for some fixed mind people. IIRC they don't include a wireless charger

exactly, they could use type C but again that would sure reduce their greedy profit margin. you sure have idea of how ridiculous their price for lightening cable & charger.

I saw a video pointing them out (might have been the WAN show before last actually) and they were up to like $90, but then, they were also like 90 W or somewhere around that iirc, which means those were definitely not just phone chargers xD

yep right. If i'm not mistaken iphone can take only 7.5w now & software update might enable to take 15w at future.

My point from that post being two fold:

  • I think people can sometimes be too quick to judge and hate without actually thinking.  Example: "lol look at the super overpriced phone charger" when that's not even what it actually is
  • Idk what their prices are.  I would expect them to be higher than most, as per usual for apple, but nothing out of the ordinary (ie not $90 lol)

I know most chargers are 2.4 amps at 5 V so that would be 12 W but various forms of fast charging can push it up further from there.  How high I'm not sure but again, not any where near 80 or 90 W... it would just instantly explode xD

wow that still seems like quite a lot for a phone battery to handle lol. 15w is quite a bit. Even at only 3A honestly I would never want to charge my batteries that high.

I really don't like "Fast charging" Yeah its good to a point but after that its is kinda bad for your battery lol. 15w is already 3A and I'm kinda uncomfortable with that on our current battery tech.

That's the problem with adopting new tech.

It's easy to go from micro-USB to USB-C because the benefits are clear - you get a reversible connector that is way more versatile.

The pros of transitioning from lightning to USB-C are less apparent. Lightning is already reversible, many of the purported benefits such as thunderbolt 3 speeds are redundant on a mobile device where most data transfers take place wirelessly anyways, and lightning is already embedded into so many aspects of Apple's ecosystem, from their wireless keyboards, mice and trackpads, to the Apple TV remote, to the AirPods charging case. Heck, even the fast-charging from USB-C is only a little faster than doing so from my 12W iPad charger.

The tradeoff of having had a reversible charging connector 4 years before USB-C is that now, there is no reason for Apple to switch. Lightning has solved all the problems that USB-C was supposed to solve with micro-USB. Switching now would simply result in way more problems than it solves.

Apple will probably just stick with lightning until they are ready to remove the charging port from the iPhone altogether, if and when that day eventually comes.

Well, lightning came around long before USB-C was an option. And so transitioning to type-C would be a kind of lose/lose situation -- they would upset just as many people as they make happy, while adding the complexity that is the USB-C market, and losing some profit in the process. All the while gaining basically nothing -- people would get a standardized cable, but enough people have iPhone's that it's standardized enough that several people around will always have a lightning cable to borrow. So there would really be very little gained switching to type-c, although it certainly would be nice to have one cable for everything.

Yeah I get that, it was all pointed out above already but it still would be nice, especially if they're going to try pushing headphones with a new end on them... sure would be nice if at the very least they went to something slightly standard that people could also use elsewhere

Though this household has no Lightning compatible i-devices (A couple old iPods), I keep a Lightning cable around for guests.

USB-C has an advantage in that it can carry analog audio without using an external DAC, allowing for dirt cheap converters. Though most people probably won't care.

Is it a positive or negative indication about Apple that these other supposedly worse devices don't have the problem? ;)

If you're gonna claim that " Apple [...] are more capable of getting closer to the perfect case " I would make sure the evidence doesn't suggest the opposite first :P
