YouTube changes search algorithms after misinformation during Las Vegas shooting

YouTube has changed its search algorithms to display more reliable and trustworthy sources after the violent attack in Las Vegas saw a spike in misinformation and hateful content appear on the site, reports The Wall Street Journal.

 

The paper reports that on Tuesday the fifth result shown when a user searches "Las Vegas shooting" showed a video that claimed there were multiple shooters involved (authorities had confirmed there was only one). The video, called "Proof Las Vegas Shooting Was a FALSE FLAG attack—Shooter on 4th Floor," had received 1.1 million views in 27 hours. YouTube removed the video on Wednesday.

 

A source familiar with YouTube told the WSJ the video streaming site is accelerating the rollout of planned changes to its search engine in response to criticism. YouTube began showing more reliable sources in search results on Wednesday, but hasn’t revealed how it determines which sources are authoritative and which aren’t.

 

"When it comes to news, we have thousands of news publishers that present a variety of viewpoints,” the company said in an email to the WSJ.

This makes me wonder if this has anything to do with Casey Neistat's video being demonitized even though it's about charity. Here's the video in question.

This sucks because Google's algorithm is censoring videos that has anything to do with the tragic Las Vegas shooting. So what will happen if I recorded a video with my phone about the incident because I was there? As it turns out, it will be filtered out by the algorithm and will only show videos from news agencies. I think they did this as to filter out videos who might erroneously interpolate the facts about the tragic event and turn it into the so-called "fake news". In return, something as innocuous as a charity video for the victims of the Las Vegas shooting are demonetized even though Casey specifically said that the Ad Sense revenue from the video together with the Go Fund Me donations. Basically, YouTube's algorithm is creating way too much false positives. While I am not a content creator like these people, I certainly understand their disappointment.

 

Which bring me to a question to @Slick and @LinusTech, is there an ETA for the dedicated Floatplane website since it now has its dedicated Twitter account?

Youtube said it themselves, their policy is not to run ads on videos about tragedies, they(youtubers) can try to remove the ad and see if it(the video) will be filtered out.

Its just sad to see the way YouTube is going. It should have remained independent of Google. Its Googles fault that YouTube is like this.

Except per that Phillip DeFranco tweet YouTube didn't remove the ad's from that Jimmy Kimmel piece. If Google's policy is to not allow videos of tragedies to be monetized then that is fine but it should actually be enforced across the board.

 

Of course HBO/Comedy Central/etc. have their own sweetheart deals with YouTube and don't have to deal with everything that the normal content creators do.

Policy is a blatant lie: plenty of news organizations do run news content even about tragedies, with ads. They just want to stop anybody who isn't a big news network from even second hand comments.

*For the record, I'm not saying those videos allegedly showing more shooters are true, I'm just tired of Google deciding they alone can decide that for us.

So who gets to decide what is a reliable resource? As we have seen in some of the US presidential elections, or any other hot button topic that shows up. (ik this is Canada based forums, but for the sake of example)

 

One "news source" says one thing. Flip the channel and its another "news Source" spewing the complete opposite information. If anyone watches one network, the other would technically be completely lying and "unreliable"?? What do we do about this situation? This is almost the same but between "reputable sources" instead of people trying to take into account what they thought they saw and letting the marketplace of ideas sort through the "conspiracies" like we have been doing for ever now.

 

When in all reality, it was 3rd party outside news sources that were more in line with each other than these "Prime Time News Networks" bickering and trying to paint everyone else and each other as fake or not reliable?

 

So now which "reliable source" are we going with? It seems here that what is "reliable" will once again be decided for us just like the ones that made it to "TV". How long will it take before there is another issue where no one agrees and were back to the same bullshit and we find an alternative, Just like we did with TV News...

 

Just an excuse for more censorship? I wonder if this will effect how YouTube has been able to spread the word of the people and how we fell, and if they can stand separate from the TV news networks. Mainstream news is so close to being dead if it is not already, I just hope YouTube just didn't sign themselves up to go down with them if they cant decide on what is reliable and what is not.

 

I'm not trying to say they will censor "everything", but when does it stop? and where do we draw the line? Once it starts how hard will it be to stop it, if at all? You tube can do whatever they want to as a company, and it will be up to the people to change where we watch our videos if this does get out of hand... Im Just skeptical :/ and just though of YouTube as a way to branch away from TV as a whole weather that be education, entertainment, news, music, anything....
