Microsoft offers new $2700 USD Surface Laptop configuration

AlTech

The Surface Laptop is a really expensive and attractive device. It's not a very practical purchase and I can't say that I think it's worth buying but it's an interesting product nonetheless.

And this piece of news makes the above statements even more true.

Microsoft is now offering a $2700 ($2699) USD Surface Laptop configuration with:

Intel core i7-7650U CPU with Iris 640 Graphics and 64MB eDRAM

1TB Storage

16GB RAM

Damn. That's a really expensive piece of hardware. Personally, i don't think laptops should be someone's primary computer. I certainly don't use mine as my primary PC (or didn't).

However, if maximum storage is at the top of your list, you'll have to settle for limitations in other areas. The 1TB option is only available with the Surface Laptop in platinum, so you won't be able to deck yours out in cobalt, burgundy, or gold colors.

The 1TB model is also only available with 16GB of RAM and Intel's Core i7 processor. Essentially, you'll have to be willing to go all in on specs if you want the most storage possible. That'll net you a decent amount of power, in addition to Intel's Iris Plus 640 graphics, but it'll cost you a pretty penny ($2,699 to be exact).

So yeah, if you were holding out for a really expensive and pretty laptop and you're baller with all the monies lying around: here's the laptop for you.

$2700 with these specs? This laptop is ridiculously overpriced.

Why exactly?

This isn't a high performance notebook. It's a MacBookAir competitor.

What? You want them to cancel their existing orders of laptops just to update new processors?

They don't refresh models with new CPUs without reason.

Now that I think about it, You probably got it mixed up with Surface Book. That's another laptop MS makes but this is called Surface Laptop.

I think Microsoft is hoping that people will pay the price for the name similarly to how people pay for Macbooks for the Apple logo. I'm not sure how big of a following the Surface brand has though at this point but maybe it's bigger than I think

It has a 1TB NVMe SSD and an expensive i7 laptop CPU with 16GB RAM. What else did you possibly want from a laptop not meant for techies?

It's to make the lower end models look better by comparison, it's not a serious product that Microsoft expects to sell.

I'm not too sure about that tbh. I've seen enough Surface Books in real life to know that they're selling despite the huge price tag.

Yeah, and how many are the top tier?

The device family is expected to sell, not the top tier or two.

From my experience, the i7 models of SurfaceBook and Surface Pro products tend to sell quite well.

I'm not expecting them to sell millions of the $2700 model but i wouldn't be surprised if they sold over 100,000 of them over the lifetime of the device.

The 1TB NVMe storage would be very helpful, especially in terms of read and write speeds when exporting large amounts of data. I mean, when it comes to the average consumer, the $2700 price tag wouldnt be that appealing, but you get what you pay for. The specs are better than the 13" mackbook pro at least and the customizable upgrades with the mackbooks significantly raise the costs, like upgrading to 16GB of ram is like $400.

Most people only need a laptop. If I didn't play games, I would surely only use a laptop. The only thing that sucks about only having a laptop is the tiny screen. It sometimes feels like my 24inch monitor is small, I can barely imagine using my laptop's 15.6inch display for everything.

I used to be quite active here.

Now, if they could just make a regular surface with like an i3 or even atom CPU to save money and sell for like $200...

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Could anybody post some compelling reasons for somebody to buy a laptop like this instead of a laptop like the Asus GL502VM which I have, which costs less than half as much and is quite superior specs wise ?

Ultrabooks have their place, especially in the realm of portability.

Gaming laptops are very nice spec-wise, and will beat the shit out of an ultrabook in that regard, but the question is will it have good battery life? Will it be nice, slim and portable all at the same time? Will it not dissipate a ton of heat? So on and so forth.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

I mean... they're totally different classes of laptops.

That's like saying "Why would I buy this Audi sports car when a turbo'd Honda Civic can perform just as well?"

Basically, it kills your ASUS laptop in a couple of ways:

1. Battery Capacity

2. Weight (It weighs half as much as yours)

3. Overall portability - it's light and easy to move around

4. Size of SSD (Yours tops out with a 512GB SATA SSD - compared to a 1TB NVME SSD)

5. RAM - yours only has 8GB out of the box - upgradable to 16GB but you've got to do the upgrade yourself or find a business that will pre-upgrade the RAM on it

Now, lots of people will read what I just wrote and say "I don't give a shit about that stuff!" And that's great. That's why we have choice and competition. Go buy the ASUS. But LOTS of people value the things that I laid out here. For those people? The ASUS wouldn't be as good of a choice.
