Yahoo just said every single account was affected by 2013 attack — 3 billion in all

For those that aren't aware, in August 2013, Yahoo had a major security breach that they said (in December 2016) resulted in email addresses, passwords, phone numbers, birthdays, and the like for 1 billion (of 3 billion) accounts being compromised by the attackers. Today, they announced that ALL 3 billion accounts had their information compromised, apparently discovering the full extent of the breach through their recent integration into Verizon.

The company required all users who had not changed their passwords since the time of the theft to do so. Yahoo also invalidated unencrypted security questions and answers so they cannot be used to access an account," Yahoo said Tuesday.
 

 

So... yeah. Maybe if you were planning on opening a Yahoo account, don't. And if you had one back in 2013, make sure you've changed your passwords (though, considering it's been 4 years, you probably should have done that already). At this point, Yahoo feels like it's dead in the water, and this just feels like a final nail in the coffin, as I don't know anyone who would be willing to create an account with them at this point - aside from those who are seriously out of touch with tech. If you know any such people, I would advise that you advise them to say away from Yahoo. Their security sucks. Also the fact that it took 4 years and merging with another company to be able to disclose the full extent of this breach.

That was the assumption back in 2013. If people were waiting until now to change passwords welp .. their loss..

I thought their entire business plan was to get just enough attention to get bought by some larger company. Which I guess they succeeded at. I don't think it was ever meant to be a legitimate, long-term business.

Honestly, no one should be using Yahoo Mail... It has more ads than fricken Gmail and their first party apps are a joke. I will never understand why my parents still stick to Yahoo mail.

Yahoo has always (well mostly) been the bane of email, next to Hotmail and AOL. You know if you getting scam mail if its from ****@yahoo.com

I never cared it is my spam email used for basically all stuff that just requires a email, I mean I was part of the first 1 billion..... they forced me to change password basically I still don't care.... maybe a few do still use it heavily but they should really change

yah this is pretty bad, nice one Yahoo, took you 4 years to figure out how many accounts were impacted and it turned out it was all of them

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

While Google may read your Gmail inbox to target ads, at least you're less likely to get hacked because of encryption problems unlike Yahoo Mail.

Yahoo email does have one good use, as a throw-away email account when you're required to sign up for a service that you'll only use once...
