ASUS ROG STRIX B350-I GAMING ITX pictured *Updated with official page* and X370-I

So the Swedish retailer, Inet has listed a new Asus Strix B350 ITX motherboard, and man does it look interesting. Sadly there have been few AM4 ITX boards on the market so far, so for ITX builders, this could be what they are looking for.

What makes this motherboard so interesting, is the peculiar setup above the PCI Express slot. It's a daughterboard containing the soundcard (or some of it), as well as an M.2 slot with cooler, floating above the rest of the motherboard.

The board comes in at 1899 Swedish Kronor, which is about 3 US dollars. Wait, about 230$ with 25% VAT. To put that into perspective, the ASUS ROG STRIX Z270I GAMING costs 2090 SEK, which is about 257$. A bit overpriced for a seemingly simple board, but remember the B350 chipset supports overclocking.

 

Some interesting specs:

 

  • Number of M.2: 2 (So apparently this board has 2 M.2 ports. I wonder if the second is on the back)
  • USB 2.0 (Internal): 2
  • USB 3.1 (Internal) Gen 1: 2
  • USB 3.1 (External) Gen 1: 4
  • USB 3.1 (External) Gen 2: 2

Pretty cool design with double heatsinks for both M.2 drives. But that is not all though. If you think B350 is not enough, Asus decided to make an X370-I mini ITX motherboard too:

The only issue is that the X370 doesn't really provide any benefits at all. Only difference between the two boards seem to be ESD guards for LAN, audio and USB. Hardly impressive. Another issue is that only one M.2 NVME port is PCIe 3x4. The other one is PCIe 2x4, so it can't max out a Samsung 960 evo for instance:

This is the biggest issue with AMD's current chipsets: The lack of PCI lanes. Should be good when new chipsets launch next year for Zen+. Until then, these boards do look really nice.

that's with a 25% tax. will likely be in the high 100s in the US.

It would be nice, but I'm guessing this is aimed at high end itx rigs not HTPCs: is not like an HTPC would need dual m.2 slots, an 8 pin power cable for power delivery (and presumably the VRMs and cooling of them to handle those overclocks) etc.

 

It honestly feels like an X370 board that just dropped to B350 since it cannot support SLI or Crossfire anyways so why not save some bucks there.

Looks like 6 phases. Not sure what the seventh on top is for. I assume the far right is for RAM though.

If it's 6 true phases, it might be an excellent ITX Ryzen board.

The heatsink also looks ok.

Isn't the problem with ITX on AM4 that the socket is so huge that everything gets kinda cramped? 

Maybe the pins could be more dense if it was LGA.

 

Anyway, it's good that we see more ITX options for Ryzen.

Maybe that required a more decent SOC VRM and with the market that would get this motherboard and use the iGPU is probably very small so i can understand why they just ditched it.

 

Yes SOC VRM is required but without the requirement to power a potential iGPU they can reduce it, 1 or 2 decent phases is likely more than enough.

The VRM will be most likely 4+2 phase, mosfets are most likely (80% of Asus mobos have these) IR3555Ms, 60A/125°C max continuous.

The chokes however, they will be really high end stuff. These look to be the Microfine linear chokes used on expensive ROG mobos.

The 4 phases are compensated by the big amount of caps tho
