I think it's pretty neat how LGA 2011 chips are actually rectangular, not a lot of people realize that. I think the heatspreaders help avoid bringing attention to that, I didn't know they were rectangular until handling one personally, even with all the videos Linus and other people have made with them.

Kind of neat. X58 was never an interesting shape. Triangle CPUs when?

Ikr? Both Intel and Nvidia keep giving us more of these "cores" instead of innovating in CPU geometry smh.

Geometry is really not that important tbh. I mean, did you notice that all CPUs have the same old silver heat spreader? Why aren't they colored? Maybe even print little pictures on them. I think that is what should be focused on!

Guy in Discord server suggested circle, with screw in mounting.

Think Iron Man's arc reactor, with the big hole in the board that you screw the CPU into.

Interesting. I've never known motherboards to hang up on things like that, especially if the BIOS is supported.

That's almost the equivalent of turning Windows on and off to fix a software issue xD

It was so bizarre to me though it's always my luck to be stuck with all the issues other people never have. Now I just need to wait and save up the cash for more RAM since this X99 server platform with 2x 2698v3's supports 64GB DIMMs:

I put heatsinks on the RAM.

Here's a view from the front. It's a 4U chassis. You can ignore the bottom server.

I recently acquired a Dell T3500 with a Xeon w3530.  I pulled out the w3550 and replaced it with a 6 core x5680 I snagged off ebay for $80 cdn.

I'm still deciding what all to do with this but for now I have it running ESXI 6.5 and have a Minecraft server running on an Ubuntu Server VM.  I think I'm mostly going to use this computer as a gaming server for a few games.  I'm just deciding which games to try next.

Check out Pterodactyl, it's a half decent panel and open source. They still haven't built in a decent way to update servers with something like SteamCMD though, be aware. SRCDS has a text file script autoupdate thing if you run a server using that but it's less than ideal.

I run FreeNAS on mine, the lack of AVX isn't great on Westmere since It's primarily a Plex/NAS first but that GT1030 should be fine if I ever get a Plex Pass in the future.

Sadly, my 5820k build was the least reliable of any in almost 20 years of building.  Went through RMA three times with Intel and then just straight up sold the most recent replacement.

Caused me far more hassle than it was worth, but it was strong in it's day.

Oof.

Was the problem with the CPU specifically, another part of the system, or some combination of both?

I've been on this i7-5930K build for a little over 2 years now (CPU was released in 2014 and my motherboard was released in May 2016). Although good, what I do with it, it's pretty sluggish when dealing with complex 3D scenes. I also render on the same computer and I'm in need of something more. If I built this system in 2014 with the ROG Rampage V Extreme, this build would have been one of the baddest systems around, but unfortunately its days of glory are in the past.

The motherboard in question is the Asus ROG Rampage V Edition 10. When I go to AMD X570 with the ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (Wi-Fi), I'll certainly miss this platform, as it was my first I ever built on, and I did some ridiculous things on it (4.8 GHz 1.45V ambient open loop benching) and the board has been a blast (sans the fact that this is the most expensive motherboard that I ever purchased)!

CPU.

I had a spare board I kept around and used each time it acted up - I would throw the CPU in there to test.

No issues of the sort since moving on with different CPU/mobo.

6950X still exists :P

I would like a Rampage V board, but my modded G5 won't fit an eATX board

I know it does exist, but it pales in comparison to the Ryzen 9 series now (esp. the 3950X) :P

I have no problems fitting just about anything into my Corsair 900D, even if that involves me hacking up the case to get something to fit.

This is also true. My 5820K was mostly a sidegrade from my Ryzen 5 1600.

I would love a 900D. That's probably my all-time favorite case.

Same here. I would have loved to upgrade the case to the Caselabs Magnum SMA8, but unfortunately you can't buy a Caselabs case anymore ?

Still like the 900D though. Almost everything about it is perfect to me. No need for me to upgrade to the Corsair 1000D.

What's the bottom server for?

Just realized that I'm suppose to be sticking to X99 while here I am talking about C612 ? Where's the C602/C612 topic at?

Ignoring that, the bottom server is dual socket LGA2011 using the C602 chipset. It has 2x E5-2670v1's & 128GB of UDIMM ECC memory.

IMAG0237.thumb.jpg.1fd10441d2beac1726e3dc6a904db944.jpg

This is actually an older photo. It's gone through some minor chances since this but it's moreover still the same. It supports 24 SAS2/SATA3 bays, 20Gbit fiberoptic networking and NVMe storage.

Currently this server is my containerisation/virtualization system where it hosts all my misc projects, active network functions, backups, etc. The primary pool is eight 2TB 7200RPM drives in a two way mirror configuration. (Four two drive RAID1's in RAID0) using ZFS then with the PCI_e SSD acting as a read and write cache to the pool for the VMs. The result is I can load this thing up with as much work as I can give it and it just doesn't care. I do need more RAM though. I've just burned though 128GB. The server also has four 3TB drives and a 10TB which I use to backup the pure SSD server (which sits on top) over the 10Gig network.

J-bin 5960Xs too, they can hit 5Ghz on water and on an 8c/16t CPU that's pretty tasty.

Similar to the X58 thread, we count the server chipsets for the socket too. Otherwise we'd have to shun the SR-2 and I don't think anyone can do that.

And on my own stuff, oof. I reaaaally wanna do a smol build but a) there's one (1) X58 ITX board and they're incredibly hard to find used and b) my NH-D15S can barely keep my 5820K in check, stuffing that in a Node 202 or Evolv Shift (the two ITX cases I'd really like to build in) would be impossible. I could sell off a good amount of stuff and just keep my 5820K and mobo combo for a bench/tinkering rig like my X5670/X58 Classy combo, but reee I like muh HEDT. I do have an X99 Micro 2 though, I could go the middle ground and get a compact case like the Meshify C Mini, that still has clearance for my cooler. Or I stop being a lazy bastard and move my custom loop into the Evolv ATX my X99 rig lives in now.
