I'd agree with @FlatBrokeRacing, go for the card with the most VRAM. I have a 2GB GTX660, and while it seems like it can handle 1080p medium and mebbe some high settings mixed in, it gets nasty stutter, I assume because the VRAM is full (this is in Battlefront, which has pretty fancy textures).

Finally managed to figure out the issue with my E5649 (was something with Loadline Calibration) and finally got it stable at a decent overclock again - 4.4 GHz  Temps max out at 78°C which is pretty much my limit for this PC. Decent for 1.3375V I would think.

 

But still, once I get some money to spare I'll probably pick up an X5675 and custom loop to get a bit more out of it (for the sake of tinkering, not that I need it)...

 

And given my Rampage II overclocks better then my x58a-oc, I'm not really sure what to do with the latter... Its such a rare board it feels like a waste putting it in someones daily...

About 85C when running Cinebench R15, and Prime95 temps are... way too high

get a colder room... my X5675 at 4.4GHz stays below 63C because my room is pretty cool (one of the plus sides of color weather... downside is I can't paint some stuff).

My room temperature is currently at 21C and sometimes it's a much less than that, so I don't want colder room  Maybe I should buy better CPU cooler... I used to run my CPU at 4.44GHz but temps were around 90-95C.

 

Btw what is your CPU voltage? Mine is at 1.35v (CPU-Z shows 1.344v)

I have an AIO 240mm cooler on my X5675. It is getting 65C (ish, avg) temps in Cinebench at 4.7 GHz, at 1.39 V per CPU-z. I don't recall exactly what the voltage was set to in bios since I don't run it this fast most of the time.

 

edit: details from a past post:

X58 Xeon X5675, OC'd at 4.7 GHz

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R (1.4V CPU Vcore, 1.315 QPI/Vtt, 1.66V Dram for the run)

24GB DDR3-1600, OC'd to 2050 MHz (in triple channel)

 

 

I normally run the system at 215 x 21 for 4.5 GHz, and it runs a bit cooler. This was a one-off attempt to see how high I could push it without exceeding 1.4 V.

Thanks! It was a fun experiment. Zero perceptible improvement over 4.5Ghz and 1600MHz ram though, aside from fan/pump noise, so I leave it at 4.5 most of the time.

 

I'm pretty happy with it! If you look close on the screenshot, all the i7-950 and X5675 scores are mine from tinkering. You can chart pretty easily how much single-core performance improves with frequency, and when it starts hitting a wall.

 

Once GPU prices come back down to earth that's the next upgrade. The R9 290 works fine, but it struggles at 3440x1440, and my motherboard layout sucks for SLI/Crossfire (not enough spacing). I tried 2x R9 290 but it one of the cards just thermal throttles instantly due to poor airflow. So, back to 1x card.

Hmmm.... and my voltage is 1.35v as well. I am running a Gammax 400, decently beefy cooler, and have 3x 120mm fans in the front of my Enthoo Evolv, 1x 140mm rear, and 2x 140mm on top.

And yes, the X5670 works with the GA-X58A-UD7, however it is the wrong CPU, i ordered an X5675 and the seller sent me an X5670, anyhow, he told me i can keep it and he will be sending an X5675 tomorrow.

Do some chips just hit a "wall" when overclocking? Because I'm stable at 4.008GHz, but as soon as I bump it up to 4.032GHz, it just becomes so unstable it barely boots into Windows. Is this normal?

1366 CPUs are known to have FSB "holes". You should be able to go higher.

What multiplier, BCLK, CPU Vtt, QPI Vtt and QPI multiplier are you running at? (your motherboard may have different terms for these)

 

In general when trying to OC, isolate each aspect (CPU mult, BCLK, mem). Find the fastest BCLK you can stably support below 1.35 V QPI. Then start tinkering with memory speeds (i.e., multipliers). Then tinker with CPU multiplier. It's not uncommon for BCLK to be unstable in a certain range, say 175-195 (YMWV), but be stable above and below that range at lower volts than you were failing at in that 'hole' range.

 

As far as system snappiness goes, I find a higher BCLK with lower multiplier performs a bit better than higher multiplier and lower BCLK. Not a huge difference though.

Maybe it's not FSB. Could be BCLK holes. Any way there are certain clocks where it just won't run, but if you go ahead and push past it it'll work.
