Anyone play around with X79?

I've been kicking around the idea of going from X58-> X79 xeons since I would only need to upgrade CPU and Mobo (since DDR3 is used there). Anyone made the jump with noticeable differences? I am sure there are benchmark differences but are there real-world differences?

I can't justify a GPU now, but a minor platform upgrade I can swing.

I haven't no, but x79 does have some decent cpus. It would just depend on which ones you get

So decided to update my x58 based super pc to 2017, done a few upgrades on stuff that was bugging me

So here is the ole case and dust with awesome and well routed cables that i spent a lot of time on

20180116_195351.thumb.jpg.02469a28e8092f12180e86813f34ff5a.jpg

1 - Antec 1200 case which is loud and about 8 years old now swapped out for a nice Corsair Crystal 570x RGB and a few extra SP120 Fans

20180108_222248.thumb.jpg.6cbb43257822494f87aeb82e2a0099eb.jpg

2 - Its been De Dusted - aka the cpu cooler was a bit clogged up so a good clean and motherboard cleanse + new thermal paste etc.

20180116_195514.thumb.jpg.544b44c908089d88219e1c5edb2311cf.jpg

3 - a nice new Nvidia GTX 1060 instead of crossfire radeons 5770s and a gtx 950 ive also had in there.

20180108_221956.thumb.jpg.fb595afa4bf8c89943f7fdf7856beced.jpg

4 - USB 3 been added via pci express add in card.  Its nice to have USB3, even media pc which is an amd 860k, a88x  has usb3 and type c included but x58 is a bit older, but still nice to copy stuff a lot faster to nas from usb hdds20180108_221450.thumb.jpg.a0568837732ab0b776402704979817b0.jpg

5 - I wanted RGB so got some rgb stripes from deepcool and a remote control, so final look I think aint too bad, apart from cable colours on atx 24 pin and pci 6 pin power cables, and the power supply shroud can only hide so many cables, with rgb and other stuff i had quite a few cables to put in down there and they are mostly hidden, but maybe another sorting is required??

20180121_073015.thumb.jpg.413cbdc79b1c4c1ee0d3e73257d256b9.jpg20180121_073210.thumb.jpg.3ab0f3bd021e3ecd3010a8efaa405fa6.jpg

6 - planned next month is cpu going from i7 920 to a nice xeon x5670. Worth it for only 35 quid. Get a decent IPC upgrade. 45nm vs 32nm, and a few more cores and a decent oc shud be gd.

let me know what you think

cheers

here is the web address for the supported cpus on your mobo and what bios supports them, although google if anyone is using the x5670 with your motherboard and has it working as i didnt see it on the supporterd cpu list

You will need to upgrade the bios for the best odds of getting a Xeon to work. Though I have noticed, even with the bios upgraded, Gigabyte boards are a little picky when it comes to Xeons. I have the model right above yours, the EX58-UD5. With a Xeon X5650 installed, the system starts a "Detecting RAM" phase then crashes a few seconds after. I've tried many different ram configurations and so far nothing I've tried has worked. I've detailed my process here:

I haven't come back to it in a while though. Might I suggest you get a W-series processor instead? i think it would be a better fit, because:

1) Seems to be a few bucks cheaper and the model I was looking at has a higher clock speed than its X-series counterpart

2) W-series CPUs have 1 QPI link instead of 2 on the X-series, increasing compatibility with consumer X58 boards

3) Memory controllers are more flexible, supporting higher speeds (Actually not so sure about that one)

4) Gigabyte lists official support for W-series cpus, but no support for X-series

Here's a link to a good one:

Hm, I only have one Gigabyte x58 board (x58a-oc), but that one accepts the Xeons I've tested (W3680, e5649, e5640, e5620). Don't have any x56** Xeons, but I would be surprised if it didn't accept them. It is a special board though, so the same may or may not apply to other gigabyte boards, though I think in general they work quite well.

Yea I was specifically talking about the E-series boards like the UD3R or UD5. X58-A OC is a very different board design overall.

Didn't knew this topic existed, i'm glad i found it!

So, i've been playing around with my X58 system a little bit in the last few days, bumped up the clock on the ole' i7-930 to 4ghz while i wait for my chinese X5675.

One number that caught my attention while benchmarking was the read/write speed from the SSD (SanDisk G26 240gb) on CrystalDiskMark. 360mbps read and 250mbps write, what gives? On my B85 this SSD can achieve around 550mbps read and 450mbps write.

Is this due to that Marvell SE9128 sata3 controller?

I'm not really sure, it may be that they aren't communication properly but really that is still pretty decent. both your read and write speeds crush mine. My 850 evo gets speeds around 150-200 write

My guess would be that I did something wrong and you are getting unlucky, if you figure out what is wrong you should post back here I'm curious what you find

IIRC the Marvell controllers are no good, so most don't use them. You could probs get a PCIe to SATA adapter to wring the maximum speed from your SSD...

Do you have an hdd you could transfer them to? Steam makes it super easy to migrate your libraries (I know you hardly use steam and that is your first mistake :P)

Well, I have Battlefront 2015 and Battlefront 2 2017 on there. And Origin has 0 options to move game files, they removed that feature for some unknown reason. What I really need to do is buy another 2TB drive or two, so I can have room to organize all my stuff and start fresh.

IIRC the Marvell controllers are no good, so most don't use them. You could probs get a PCIe to SATA adapter to wring the maximum speed from your SSD...

like this: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124045&cm_re=pcie_to_sata-_-16-124-045-_-Product

Yes! That could work, i'm going to look further down the idea to see if it really works, i read some dudes even managed to boot X58 with M.2 SSDs...

Thanks for the tip!

I have my SSD through the Marvell controller, and it's....sufficient? for me.

My USB3 ports have never worked well on my UD3R so I bought a USB3 / PCIE expansion card, and wow the difference in speed is astronomical. I'm tempted to do the 950 NVMe + PCIE adapter board idea, but....those drives are expensive and I don't need to spend the money realistically since the computer is really just used for gaming now.

If you are just gaming on it then it really wouldn't be worth it other than for a cool factor. If you do a lot of content creation though and move large files around then it could potentially be beneficial

Yep, that was my thought too. Aside from occasional go pro videos from track days, I don't deal with large files on that computer. Work stuff has its own much newer and better machine.

I'm using a Orico 10 port powered HUB on my UD7's NEC 3.0 controller, it never misses a beat.

Just for peace of mind sake, i've seen GA-X58A-UD3Rs work with X5670/X5675 Xeons before, so my GA-X58A-UD7 (rev 2.0) should work fine, amirite?
