Well, I’ll give’er a close listen when I get home I guess, hopefully this test of hearing goes as well as my history test

You seem to underestimate the thermal mass/passive dissipation capabilities of a D15. Unplugging the fans for a few seconds long enough to tell if a sound stops are not is more than fine.

Fun fact about the R9 295x2-- each GPU is in its own IOMMU group with its own device ID (and, audio path). This means you could technically pass through each of the GPUs to their own VM for teh gamez....IF you can find a solution to getting graphics/audio output from the headless second GPU.

posting because....am leaning towards doing that for the SR-2 build if it's possible. Researching now. Upside is that IF it is doable (big IF) then I would free up a full pair of PCIe slots on the board to use for SAS, USB, 10gb, etc. Dual 295x2 would free up three or four slots, depending where the card is. Pretty appealing!

Backup plan is quad single-slot-converted-and-watercooled GPUs, but to my knowledge there are exceedingly few cards that don't have the second-slot DVI port (basically, Founders 1080ti, newer AMD from what I can find) and I would rather not hacksaw cards to make this work. 3x additional 1080ti + 4x waterblock = $holyballs, 2x R9 295x2 with waterblocks is muuuch cheaper. Also, laughably, single slot.

Hmmmmm... get cheap V56s and slap blocks on them ?

Power consumption will be fucking massive but it's not like the 295x2 is better in the slightest.

Or if they're anything like the RVII, just power consumption power. Core22 units force my GPU to underclock by 200Mhz while halving PPD (for only a slight reduction in power consumption, 20W or so) and I don't understand why. Core21 units seem fine though.

I mean, surely a V56 would outperform a 295 in folding?

Yeah but they'll eat nutso power too so it's not really an improvement lol.

Hm, true, true. 1070’s are cheap nowadays tbh, not sure how they apply to this exact situation. But, 180 for a 1070 buy it now is pretty nice (bids starting at 100)

Do the FEs have a DVI or not? Tons of AIBs added them in even on cards that don't have them in the reference form, tis dumb. Card can't go single slot with a DVI port unless you're able to just cut it off without damaging the card somehow.

Oof. If they didn't then you could get this: https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-fc-terminal-x7-acetal. And then run 7x single slot WCed cards because uh logic.

Yeah. And I can get 1660 Supers without a DVI port... Bykski makes 1660/1660 Ti blocks... total for the cards alone would be around the price of a big boy 2080 Ti tho ?. But the sheer flex of a 7 PCIe slot block of GPUs...

so i just got home... and it would seem that core 21 projects are back on the menu ? although maybe not in your case

I had a Core21 unit or two that were fine, then Core22 which instantly oofs the rig. Which is weird, Core22 used to be in beta but I guess they're pushing them more now. Supposed to be really good for Navi, apparently not so for Vega.

Apparently Vega cards have some bug that makes them less than ideal for virtualization. I haven't looked into it a toooon since I don't own any (and do have R9 290s so the 295 isn't that much of a stretch) buuuuuut yea those are getting super cheap and are single slot. Hmm.

The 1070/1080 FEs do have DVI, only the 1080ti doesn't from recent nvidia stuff. RTX/16 series I'm not all that certain about since they're many dollar units.

@Zando Bob 1660 don't have DVI you say? hmmmmmmm

this project should be titled "well i opened a chrome tab and yet another $500 frittered away'

I think I've decided at this point that my next build will be done in a 750D. That's actually the first case I fell in love with ❤️

??Fair! With so many options (and really good options), this definitely plays a role.

Part of the other half of that decision was that I might target eATX for my next motherboard as well ?

hey guys. Finally my x5675 came in and installed it.my board is gigabyte ex58-ud5, bios f13. I just installed did nothing special. It works like a charm. I think my cooler akasa nero (first revision with 3 copper pipe, bought it at 2010) isnt best but still x5675 runs like 10 degrees cooler maybe a little more than my i7 920.
