General Intel HEDT Xeon/i7 Discussion

I was under the impression that increased memory was part of r20? I could be wrong

It uses more ram sure, but that's purely because it renders a larger and more intensive scene. And it does that in order to slow down faster processors, since higher core counts absolutely blasted through R15.

Cinebench has never been a RAM benchmark AFAIK.

I was more so meaning that increased memory bandwidth had more of an effect vs r15, although thinking about it recent experience would prove otherwise

Yea, I saw zero repeatable change in score as a function of ram speed. Any difference from 1033 up to 2000ish (in triple channel) was within run-to-run variation.

Uncore, different story. Ram speed itself, not a factor for cinebench R15 specifically IME.

I was able to buy an X58 system for C$120 with an i7 950, 10GB of RAM, a Gigabyte GA X58A UD3R, some Radeon graphics card, and a decent Corsair case (don't know the exact model). It's just missing a PSU and storage. I'll post pictures later.

I'm planning on turning it into a hackintosh (hopefully).

And I still need to get mine working reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee but first I need a case to actually hold the damn thing.

Also may we get an F in the chat for this Sabertooth:

Couple mosfets cooked themselves (PQ117 for sure, PQ120 and the one to its left already had that bluing when I got the board so they may have already been toast). May try fixing it sometime in the future, it is only $10 or so for 10 of these suckers and I already have a soldering iron (would need a desoldering wick or whatever tho). If traces aren't damaged apparently it'll still work.

Is it a decent upgrade to go from a i7 920 to a i7 990x? Im doing it because of the lga 1366 socket.

Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2

Hell fuckin yeah my dood. 32nm Hexacores are a massive upgrade from the quads, especially the i7 920.

You should be able to update your BIOS and then run Westmere-EP hexacore Xeons though. Which are the same thing as the i7s (32nm 6c/12t lads) but usually cheaper because there's more of them on the market. The X5670/X5675 are usually the best combo of price vs performance and OCing capabilities. These chips can swallow masses of voltage without issue and usually OC well, so if you have a reasonable cooler you should be able to daily 4.2-4.5Ghz all core.

Still have my i7-970 build from 2010, running at 4.2 all core. Mobo is slightly flaky and sometimes hangs at boot, but when it boots it runs fine. It still gets some use occasionnally, including gaming, packs a very decent punch and was still pretty competitive even a couple of years ago.

Mine's in the mail. I haven't settled on a case either. The Anidees looks super promising (the 'Pro' variant is intriguing but I can't find any information on real-world use. The marketing copy impilies 3x radiator support....), buuuut my local computer parts store has a NOS Corsair 900D for a damn good price, and it'll also fit dual 480s and maybe another 240 or more. Downside is the 900D doesn't allow you to hide drives AND support radiators which visually bothers me. Probably moddable though.

I might need to do something like this on a Supermicro board I've got my eye on, as it's failing to post apparently. How did you go about finding the replacement chip?

I googled the number on the top lol, seems to be a standard mosfet that's quite cheap. Assuming it didn't burn out any internal traces, I should be able to just desolder the old ones and stick new ones on, tho my questionable (aka nonexistent) soldering skills may make that difficult if i do decide to attempt it.

Not a glass box like the Anidees is either (glass is nice but the Anidees is a lot of glass).

Yea! HPTX and XL-ATX support out of the box. Removable drive cages is a nice touch, 5.25 bays that can apparently be un-riveted. Dual PSU support, though at cost of radiator size.

I'm tempted to pick it up assuming it's not missing all the pieces and internal bits I'd need to assemble stuff. Doubly so if someone online has managed to install a bunch of rads and also kept the drive cages. I don't need server level drive cages but some would be nice.

tbh for an SR-2 a single 360 for the two CPUs would be plenty unless you really, really wanna push clocks. I'd slap 1.45v through my X5670 on a single slim 360 and it wouldn't break the high 60s.

Definitely true-- my x5675 is on a single 240 AIO and is rock solid. I'm thinking overkill for 2xCPU, chipset, plus potentially 4x GPU if i can get VMs to work. Probably won't need dual 480s for that even still, but......why not? haha.

I mean the whole point of the SR-2 is why not so... why not? ?

Also, anyone interested in an X58 Micro? It's the most lackluster of all X58 mATX boards and has a funky 8 pin plug location but I mean, it's an mATX board and it runs just fine (haven't tested with Xeons yet tho). In great condition too, I'm just looking to downsize my parts collection for the sake of my sanity. It was going to go in a smol rig I'm building, but I think I'll use my i5 2400 there because that's proven to be hackintosh friendly before, and its board uses a UEFI BIOS vs the old legacy style.

And @GrockleTD I'd be down to yeet my X58 Classy SLI 3X your way, I did mention that in discord but I'll tag ya here too. I'm planning to get an X79 Dark so I'll need someplace for that EATX board to live, and the only place is my Air 540 which currently has the X58 Classy in it, so that will be homeless. And I'd rather keep the 4-Way since it's badass-er. It is a V1.0 so it won't work with Xeons other than the W3690 unless it has the Westmere-EP mod, but that's dead simple to do. If you have a soldering iron you could do it yourself, else I can probably clear a spot and do it quick. May have some thermal pads left over too so I could replace those while I'm at it if they're in iffy condition. Board hasn't had any issues when I was using it. And the northbridge will not overheat, lol.

One million dollars. Or more uh... $109.99 sound fair? totally not the price of an EVGA CLC 280 that I would like to have again so I can put it on the X79 board I plan to get as a top mount in my Air 540

Tho tbh can easily go lower lol. I paid about $106 for it with CPU IIRC. $90 something plus shipping, eh too lazy to dig through eBay purchases again.

Yes, but literally last time I touched a soldering iron was in the grade of fourth, and that was soldering regular sized wiring, forget sensitive electronics

Ha! Still want to see if I can threaten my msi board into working, also, I desperately need a new chair. (Literally got told by a doctor that I need to improve my posture, current chair doesn’t allow this) so it may be a couple weeks before I can get to you with the purchasing of said board

Is it a decent upgrade to go from a i7 920 to a i7 990x? Im doing it because of the lga 1366 socket.

Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2

The X5670 for a while could be found for like $12 but the X5675 is generally a better bin with more multipliers, the unlocked i7 skus are nice but most of the time if you have a decent board with a decent bios you'll be able to get the same performance with the limited multipliers using just the base clock.

My X5675 at 4.5ghz doubles the cinebench scores of my overclocked i7 930 which was a total potato. I've been looking at GPU upgrades from a GTX 1080 lately just because at 1440p it's nowhere near bottlenecking the cpu in RDR2. I won't end up doing it since there's no worthwhile upgrades for a 1080 when I paid $299.99 new for it almost two years ago though...

Picking up a Westmere is totally worthwhile, I nearly made the terrible mistake of spending $400~ on a Ryzen 1500x build which I had in a cart on newegg. Instead I picked up a X5660 and another 6gb of Samsung ECC memory for $40 and outperform the 1500x in every way aside from single threaded performance where I match a stock 1700 instead.

They can be more difficult to dial in but it's much more easy to toss a $13 X5660 in a drawer because it was a loser than a $100+ i7 980x/990x. Many of the 45nm Nehalems are made more valuable by drilling a hole through them and selling them as a keychain. Stick a good cooler on it like an NH-D15 instead and shove like 1.4v into the vcore and you will see it pick up big time running in the mid 4ghz area.
