2. B-die is good for OCIng.

The best stick to buy for the X99 platform is the Samsung M393A2K40BB2-CTD 2666mhz stick. These sticks are B-die, single rank, 16GB, feature a 2nd gen buffer and a good PCB layout

 

The Samsung 2133P and 2400T sticks both have a weaker buffer so I would avoid them. There is also an 3200AA kit (M393A2K40BB2-CWE, M393A2K40DB3-CWE) but if your CPU has a weak memory controller, you may not be able to post. 

 

These kits run at JEDEC speed, no XMP profile so you'll have to manually overclock them. 

Update, My 16GB 2400MHz (M393A2K40BB1-CRC) memory kits came in today. They work! 4 sticks, 16GB each, 64GB total. I got them to overclock to 2666. But If I try to run them at 2933, my CPU loses channels A and B  I think I got a weak IMC. I updated my previous post. I would recommend avoiding this kit and getting the 2666 kit instead.

One of these days, I'll get an 8-DIMM kit of Dominator Platinums, probably after I get an AIO(RAM clearance with this chunky cooler is tough).

8 DIMMs will put too much stress on the IMC. I would go with 4 sticks max and either 1Rx4 (16GB stick) or 1Rx8 (8GB stick). So 32 or 64GB total memory. 

 

Get an E5-1660 v3 preferably J serial +  4x M393A2K40BB2-CTD. If you get a weak IMC, you'll struggle to run over 2666MHz anyways

I probably won't go too high to begin with to be honest, I'm running 4x4GB 2400Mhz at the moment.

Meh full slot. CPU is still only 4 channels. 

 

Are you running gen 1 micron/crucial ram?

It's a mix of stuff, I don't really know. I think there's probably some Micron and Samsung, maybe some Kingston as well.

sux. gen 1 micron is fairly good for x99 platform.. you can run 2400/2666 cl11/cl12 1.35v which is perfect for X99.

is it possible that my memory isn't running in triple channel due to the i7-920 running out of bandwidth, or is my mobo just shit

I hope it works out for ya, that looks like a very nice board from the picture. Asus Sabertooth boards always look really nice. Well, the older ones do. The newer TUF boards have some questionable choices.

I don't... don't think that's a thing? What is it running in? You have 3 or 6 DIMMs in the correct slots?

I've ran 3x8GB in triple channel on an i7 920 without issue.

Ofc. That, try different sticks (and/or try all sticks 1 by 1 in a known working slot), try a different CPU if possible. That'll help you narrow down what's actually the failing component.

Will the board just refuse to POST if you run it in 2-4-6 instead of 1-3-5? My X99 boards won't boot with 4 sticks unless they're in specific slots, but I don't recall ever having an X58 board do that.

indeed, postless and because it reset 3 times now i have to do my overclock all over again (said as if it was a good one to begin with)
