^^^ Just keep tabs on eBay. I got a full on EATX X58 Classified SLI 3-Way for $90 with an i7 920. Damn OP OCing board, only caveat is it's a V1.0 (but a very simple solder job gets it working perfectly with Westmere-EP). Also got an X58 Micro for $100, but eeeh that's not the best mATX board, the Gene is much, much better.

What is your opinion on  swapping 6950x 4.3 for a Ryzen 3800x (or 3900x) is it worth the hassle of selling my old gear and building completely new platform? I would of course have to pay some extra to complete a new Ryzen rig.

 

Single core perf is much much better with Ryzen, multi-core is about the same  (Intel 10c vs 8C AMD). 

Or maybe just forget about it and keep my current rig?

 

I do some occasionally video editing, but mostly it's my gaming rig, i'm wondering if my current  CPU will get me through 9th gen consoles.

If the 6950X performs better in video editing and suits your needs in gaming, I wouldn't personally change anything.

This is a 4-5 year old CPU as it is, I would expect the price to go down to maybe $500 used in the next couple years.

@soks If it's not being slow for what you're currently doing then no, no need at all to upgrade.

If you're doing high refresh rate gaming or any other workload that needs high single core performance, then maybe.

Haswell-E/Broadwell-E still hold up fine for most use cases today, if you don't have to upgrade, then waiting just gives you more options.

So, I just managed to grab a vega 56 for £190 on ebay with samsung HBM, since I usually just cart my main gpu back and forth between mine and the other halves place when I go there I want to see if i can beat my old 18K firestrike score on that system, should be fun too, that place is stupidly cold too usually so that'll be good for benching as well as heating XD

ill see what it is when He sends me the model but all consumer boards I have looked at have never said they support xeons. my older GA-X58-USB3 has support on a later bios revision which I updated to.

Hm, failing that the website says it supports a particular CPU, could always YouTube it. (I.e. Asus Rampage iii gene, x5670)

Should. Peep here has a Rampage II Formula and Rampage II Gene, IIRC they work fine with Xeons. My Rampage III Formula worked fine, by all accounts the R3E and R3G (Extreme and Gene) do as well.

It's hard to tell with the pic but it looks a lot like a Rampage III R3E

The Extremes and Formulas are both nice boards, doesn't really matter all too much which it is. Though ofc the Extremes are just that bit nicer.
 

Either should work with Westmere-EP Xeons, I don't know of any revision requirement like there is with some older EVGA boards.

For one, it's X79 or X99. And there's no logos anywhere so I assume chinesium, big brand OEMs pretty much always have a logo or name somewhere visible on the board.

Seems like a safe assumption to me. Completely non-standard board layout, I haven't seen the 24pin connector that far away from the edge of the board since the 90s. Also lack of VRM heatsinks, I'm not aware that any X58 board was ever lacking those from a traditional manufacturer. Chipset heatsink looks quite a bit smaller than usual.

I know this ain't the classifieds, but would anybody here be interested in a relatively mangled Asus Rampage II Extreme?

 

The heatsinks are bit bent, but the bulk of the damage is in the CPU socket. I've been able to slowly repair a fair bit of it, but some pins are still bent. According to Asus' website, this board unfortunately does not accept Xeons, so I'm also fresh out of a CPU to test it with.

 

I'll grab some pictures later today and throw them in this post as well.
