Can't be arsed to put in the work to tweak a 4.6Ghz OC (100Mhz gain isn't really worth it), and 4.7 or above gets too toasty for the cooling setup, I only have a single 360 slim rad for both the CPU and the GPU. If I get better cooling in the future then I'll probs be able to push this to 4.8-5Ghz. Booted to windows with 1.35v at 5Ghz but I got a BSOD on login, confident that if I had cooling to keep it under control at that temp I could push around 1.37 with reasonable safety. 

Also oof after all that work, none of my 3.5" HDDs are working. Need to pull them and test them one by one to make sure it's not the drives, though the SATA controller was throwing errors when I first set up Windows so that could be off too (My 2.5" SSD works fine, but I believe that's on a separate controller, this board has two show up in device manager). If it is the SATA controller, I'll just wait till next rebuild to RMA the mobo, not worth tearing it down again at this point. 

Also for temps under load, the CPU stays at around 60-63C, GPU 60C or so (90C hotspot), under gaming load for a good few hours. In stress tests the CPU will hop up to around 79C though, and I haven't tested with both the CPU and GPU on full blast at the same time.

I think stock was 2700 or something points. Massive difference between the stock 3Ghz/3.5Ghz boost and 4.5Ghz all-core (ring also at 3.5Ghz, stock multi is 24 for 2.4Ghz I think?). Do wish I had the cooling to push it to 5Ghz even for just a bench run, want to see how it compares to a friend's 9900K (about 4900). I'd probably push 4500 or so, it seems to go up around 200 points every 200Mhz increment, at 4.7 IIRC I was pushing 4200 or so.

“It does not post” is not very helpful to see the problem, try boot with one ram stick in the second slot from the cpu, check all cables, what mobo do you have?

it is in my signature, i did however solve one issue where the pc was automatically shutting down; bloody intel stock mounting wasn't quite right, so i fixed that. still need to figure out the non-posting. will try re-swapping the memory in a bit

What is considered to be normal/ideal temps for the northbridge?

 

I've been messing with Speedfan trying to get my fans to run at something other than 60-85% since apparently it all of a sudden works correctly after something I've changed in the past couple years. It goes up from around 48-50c at idle up to 60-62c at ~22% pwm.

single ram stick has yielded no results

Have an old i7 to try? From my reading and little bit of experience with MSI boards, they tend to be very finicky/plain not work with Westmere-EP Xeons. Certainly a lot more issues than other manufacturers from what I've seen.

ideally as low as possible, but mine idles in the mid low to mid 70s and tops out at about 80 under load, im running passive on my board with no case mind you though

Yeah my buddy's EVGA E758 ran insanely hot when it wasn't in a case, was messing around with it on the desk trying to get 4ghz out of a X5670 and saw temps at like 85-90c+ during benchmarks and shut that down.

 

I just lowered the voltage some, I think I'll just stick it in my fan profile and let Speedfan turn the fans up from near silent if it gets over 65-70c since according to old forum posts 80-100c isn't that uncommon on some boards even at stock.

i wonder if i somehow damaged the board while swapping coolers... idk. regardless probably not going to have time today to try and swap CPU's unfortunately

 

Edit: thinking back on it, this is quite probable, as i was tired and wasn't being quite the gentlest when cleaning off the thermal paste between repeated attempts with the intel stock mounting...

As long as you have not made aggressive movements and if you made a replacement of the thermal paste and also did it carefully it is likely that you have not ruined your MOBO. You actually need to put some pressure to install the new coolers, being positive this has to be somehting else.

well, you see i ended up needing to basically scrub the thermal paste off with paper towel, as it being 3AM i did not have access to rubbing alcohol...

Still fine, I've done that many a time with no issue. Built on thick carpet in woolen socks and staticy-ey synthetic tracksuit pants too, also with no issue lol. PC hardware is pretty robust in my experience.

still odd, as removing the GPU and CPU cooler are the only things i can think of that changed, i might try checking for loose screws or something, because i really have no idea at this point.

Yep! I agree with him, that paper towel shouldn't have caused a problem.

well, i was more concerned about the applied pressure, and less about using paper towel.

A CPU clamped in a socket is a pretty damn beefed piece of hardware, you would need an insane amount of pressure to risk breaking anything. Coolers already clamp down quite hard, IDK if you could even reasonably apply enough force to break something without putting your full bodyweight into it.

Yeah that really shouldn't have made any difference, unless the board was visibly deflecting by a long ways it likely wasn't this that caused the problem

Probably overpaid but this is including shipping so I don't think it was too bad. Now I need to get my hands on a Meshify C Mini and (if I have the mons) a set of EVGA Classified cards in SLI, may go for 780s or something.
