AMD Announces Embedded Polaris E9170 w/ MXM and PCIe

Finally, AMD has announced an addition to their other 2 Polaris based embedded lineup, the E9170. 

TLDR; 

E9550 = RX 580,

E9260 = A little less than a RX 560,

E9170 = RX 550.

 

Of course, these are much lower clocked than desktop variants, but also have ridiculously low power usage. The brand new E9170 is listed as having power consumption of "Up to 50 watts", although most variants use 35 watts. The E9170 will come in all 3 major form factors: MXM (Common in laptops), MCM (IC chip), and PCIe (Common in desktops). The target market for these embedded systems are things like Casino games, Medical displays, Multi-display advertising, Etc. This new E9170 will be produced for the next 7 years, until 2024, which means this is a huge opportunity for AMD to gain long-term, recurring revenue.

Opinion:

This is where Polaris really shines, and IMHO this is more important than the desktop Polaris variants. Polaris is ridiculously efficient, but the best chips have always been reserved for embedded, with the more power hungry versions going to desktop. I remember seeing this in a jayzTwoCents video pointing this out, I will add it once I find it.

 

EDIT: I added the jayzTwoCents vid (in the video spoiler) outlining how power consumption on better binned Polaris is simply stunning.

At least these new graphics chips are better then the previous generation of APUs.

This actually isn't too surprising. The RX550, which was on a new design (compared to the rest of the 500s being improved previous designs/OC'd), is something like the perfect range of "good enough" graphics output for the next decade. It'll do everything Business Computer would ever need and has all of the hardware decoding to handle up to 4K 60 Hz displays natively. 

 

I mentioned they'd probably be producing this for the next 5 years. Looks like I was off by a few. (It does everything except Gaming at all of the resolutions that'll likely to be needed in pretty much anything until 2025 or so. Which is around the time that we will probably see a new Connection type that isn't backwards compatible.) Though I'm still not sure consumer 8K monitors will be common even by then. They're cool and all, but I still don't foresee the practicality being there for a long time.

You will have a higher chance of finding a needle in a haystack than finding one of those mxm modules.

AMD has announced the Radeon E9170 Embedded GPU based off of the Polaris 12 micro-architecture.

Where last year’s E9260 and E9550 updated AMD’s embedded “high performance” and “ultra-high performance” brackets, the E9170 now brings Polaris into the “power-efficient” bracket. With 8 CUs and 1.2 TFLOPS, E9170’s specifications match the Polaris 12 based RX 550, but we are still awaiting confirmation from AMD about the precise GPU inside. Presumably, the E9170 will benefit from the new mid-power memory clock state introduced in the revised Polaris of the RX 500 series; power consumption will be reduced in mixed-resolution multi-monitor and video decoding, both use-cases that would be common for embedded parts.

 

So yeah, last year AMD didn't get around to releasing a budget Exxxx series GPU for embedded markets based on Polaris and so they're doing so this year.

Would be interesting to see a casino machine with an RX 580 equivalent inside. (Yes I know the other models would be the typical choice but it still would be interesting) On a side note, if it was possible to order some of the Mxm variants, I wonder if they would be closer to the MSRP, or would they be priced at the same level as the desktop variants being sold out due to miners.

because its still using the same dies, the price increase was made by the resellers, so it might not get higher prices
