Microsoft announces Office 2019. Coming in 2018?

Okay. Apparently I'm just a dumbass. Never mind me. I could have sworn that the whole reason I got 360 for my mother was because she needed publisher and we couldn't get it with the standard versions. My apologies.

All good - I work with the products (O365) for a living :P

Have fun with Microsoft based emails (Exchange / 365) soon :P

My uni uses Exchange/ O365 based email. So far I'm liking it other than the annoying message that I can't sync it on my PC in Outlook for Windows 10.

That intentional?

I’d find it quite bizarre that they’d in force those policies in an education sector. Normally we’ll apply that for corporate account management for senior staff.

Do you think a small business with a small capital and five employees should have Office 365 or Google Docs is enough? Asking for a friend and myself. ^_^

There is more that meets the eye
I see the soul that is inside

Depends what you need to accomplish - I’m biased towards Microsoft over Google purely because I work in the Microsoft ecosystem: Azure, 2012 / 2016 and O365. However, we do have a few clients who are Google however they still end up purchasing MS products, especially the Office suite. PM me if you want, more than happy to help.

I think so based on the fact it's the same email system used by staff afaik.

it is likely that Windows 7 will no longer be compatible with Office 2019. Windows 8.1 might still be compatible but at this point that is unknown.

In the past they've generally been at least a year behind from what I can remember so if they can get version 2019 out before then, it would sure be a change.

I doubt it. Windows 8.1's mainstream support ends in January 2018.

I can't imagine why there would be any reason for it to not work on Windows 7 unless they specifically code it to detect and block that, which I wouldn't be surprised.

They could make use of frameworks or developer tools which work on newer Windows and not older version....

They could also just block Windows 7 from being able to run it.

Like what?  A someone who runs 10 on my desktop and 7 on my laptop, I'm familiar with how both are working and I have not yet found anything exclusive to Windows 10, so if they manage to do this, it'll be a first as far as I know.

Yeah that's what I expect they'll do.

They could try to make it a UWP app and thus not work on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 ..........

That would be a really interesting move and it could still be distributed in retail because UWP Appx packages can be sideloaded on non Windows 10 S devices. TL:DR You could make Appx packages for UWP apps that install nicely without needing the Store. The store just happens to be an easy to distribute Appx packages apps. (All UWP apps use Appx for packaging btw).

That would be really silly, I highly doubt they'd do that.

Also, as someone who's worked with that (you), do you think that would be an easy conversion?  My gut feeling is "hell no" but I honestly don't actually know for sure.

Oh yeah I forgot, Office is built using MFC in C++ right now which requires that they use SDKs to target what Operating Systems they want.

So, in theory they could use the Windows 10 Anniversary Update SDK to build Office and then it wouldn't work on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

They have a converter which allows non UWP apps to be packaged as such. The problem is it makes for an awkward experience on devices which UWP would be ideal for.

Well at the end of the day, there's two ways it could stop working on anything older than 10:

  • some silly "soft lock" reason like this or just outright detecting and blocking it like I said earlier, or any other change for no reason that would make it only work on 10, like moving to UWP, etc.
  • An actual legitimate reason that a feature they want to add can't function on older versions of Windows.

While there's no shortage of ways they could do the former, and while I think that would be silly, it also wouldn't surprise me, I think that's the only "reasonable" one we can expect.  As I said, I've yet to see anything (not counting things built specifically for 10 from the start, like UWP obviously) work on 10 but not work on 7 so it would be surprising if they can actually find a legitimate roadblock.
