Premium cooling is only worth it for high-end CPU's

Unless you're trying to make a dead silent build, adding a $60 Noctua cooler to a Ryzen 5 or Core i5 makes so sense, when it's just a bit more to go for the R7 or i7.

 

Cooling increases clock speeds, and you'll see some extra frames in games, but it won't add any more cores or threads (nor will the raw power of that premium-cooled CPU approach that of a higher-end CPU at stock).

Even then, until the high-end of the consumer market is reached, $50-100 toward a better CPU goes further than $50-100 toward a cooling.

If your heavily overclocking a high end CPU, than having the extra cooling does help with temperatures when overclocking. Core i7s will perform better at gaming because they have less cores running at higher clockspeeds and ryzen will perform worser because it has more cores running at lower clockspeeds.

Ryzen 5 1600+$50 cooling vs a 7700k. There's still a $100 gap.

In a perfect world maybe not, but people have budgets so you might as well get the best overall configuration imo rather than have one extreme component which cannot be cooled properly or whatever because the money for a cooler went into a cpu with more cores that you maybe don't even use.

It's also subjective. I value not having a jet engine next to me on my desk, so I'd spend a bit more for quieter performance, which I find "worth it". I cooled my 4690k with an R1 Ultimate. Overkill? Perhaps, but it was pretty silent even under full load and hence worth it for me :)  (plus it looked awesome...)

seeing as the 1600 comes with a pretty decent cooler anyway, yah i cant see me recomending buying a cooler for it. when i built my PC, when the I5 4690K with a 970 was top of the line value, getting a cooler on that I5 would perform better then spending the extra on the 4790K with the shitty stock cooler. seeing as Intel now dont ship coolers with the K SKUs you kinda have to get one anyway. 

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
