Doesn't make me any less of an enthusiast. That's like saying you're not into sports because you don't like baseball but like basketball and football instead. There more to technology or even CPUs than overclocking especially a completely non practical solution. Just because someone doesn't fall into your definition of enthusiast doesn't mean they aren't.

Well to be fair there are data centers that use phase change cooling. Also there are liquid nitrogen cooling systems but it's out of scope of anything but top end as they run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Yep that's why I wrote show me a supercomputer (could just be servers) that have sick cool so it could be LN2 or Phase change then I'm excited when it's just extreme OC'ing for the hell of it. It's alright just not all that exciting for me really. Not that I would disrespect the effort they put in. I most certainly can't achieve what they do so there is merit to their work.

Despite what the others say I understand your meaning.

 

Drag cars are only good for a few runs then the engine needs to be completely overhauled with many parts being binned (not too mention the running gear as well).  They do it for the win and for the enthusiasm, not because there is any practical use gained from the experience for everyday drivers or even hot rodders for that matter.  Same here, the reason they do it is not to gain some sort of practical comparison or method for everyday users, but just because it is what it is, a competition.

Well I agree those kind of things are definitely more impressive to me as well, but most people (even enthusiasts), don't know or care about that kind of thing. Me personally I'm more excited by the new Z14 chip that runs at 5.2GHz and has 6MB of L2 cache per core and 128MB of L3 cache per chip. Heck you can put 6 in one drawer and have 672MB of L4 eDRAM cache.

It's not even that. It's like if you bore out the engine to max capacity and use a racing fuel NOx mix you'd be able to do 120 instead of 100, but the gas mileage is a thousandth of a mile to the gallon.

I guess it is 2017 so we have to pander to people and let them label themselves sports car enthusiasts even though they dismiss a Bugatti Veyron on a drag strip because it's not practical.

Yep, I would run a phase change myself, but darn those things are expensive.  I do know a few peeps who do rock those and others that rock other different styles of cooling than just air or water.  Can be very interesting to look at all the variety of ways to cool, even with water (I seen people use from glass coke bottles for a res to car copper radiators).

It would be baller as hell, but I don't even know what it would take to effectively let LN2 boil, recapture it, and then condense it back to liquid.  Not to mention the pumps and gaskets and stuff probably have to have zero contact with the fluid since they'll become brittle at that temperature.  And you'd have to put your desktop in a purge box (inert gas environment) to not have eventual condensation creep that is unavoidable no matter how much insulating you do.
