"The iPhone 8/8+ dethroned Android's Google Pixel as the best smartphone camera at the moment", according to DxO Mark

Or how about both cameras are great and how good a photo is depends on the photographer?

DXO mark is still a score based on opinion and not hard numbers.

False.

If I'm at a concert that bans 'big' cameras, I care that my phone will get a good shot of the band.  If I'm at a going-away party for a friend and it would be rude/intrusive to carry a big camera to the pub, I care that I can take a decent photo in low light.  And if I'm out and about and just happen to see an interesting photo subject, I still care about getting a good shot without needing perfect lighting or a stationary object.

Unless you want to make a case for everyone always carrying a large dedicated camera around at all times and all places 'just in case,' you should probably just admit you're wrong and move on.

I have never been in any of the situations you described, not because I haven't been at concerts or parties, but because nobody ever cared what sort of camera I brought along.

If you routinely take random pictures of things around you other than car plates, yes, I would argue you should have at least a high quality point and shoot with you (still way better than any phone). If you don't, you're shooting yourself in the foot, and point-n-shoots are really too compact for you to argue they are too cumbersome to have with you at all times. Perhaps you should move on if you are so triggered by the idea that your 850$ phone's camera could be made pointless by a 200$ dedicated device.

Hi

Can someone explain how did they get 96 for photo when all of the numbers are below 90 ??? Clearly it's not average of those numbers.

89 , 78 , 74 , 64 , 68 , 73 , 84 , 51 , 55 and the overall score is 96 !!!!! HOW ???

I don't know this for sure but I assume it's a weighted average, as in some values matter more than others.

Point-and-shoots are dying, take up too much pocket space and make it harder to share photos with friends.  So no, it's not usually a smart idea to carry one around, unless you have giant pockets or always carry a bag around with you.

The simple reality is that the smartphone is the one thing you can be reasonably sure people will carry with them; therefore, their camera quality matters.

To abuse car analogies: you're basically arguing that if people care at all about performance in cars, they'll buy a sports coupe.  Well, yes, a speedy coupe would probably have higher performance than a sedan, but that doesn't mean that I shouldn't care about the performance of my sedan, and not everyone can justify owning both a coupe and a sedan.  Yeah, there's a big difference in cost, but it's still true that many people will have a hard time justifying a $200 Canon Elph on top of their smartphone (even among the people who can afford flagship smartphones).

I thought the same but when all of the numbers are below 90 , even with a weighted average , it can go above the biggest number which in this case is 89. so even if that 89 score has the most "weight" ; the average can't be abow 89.

For their overall scores to be relevant , there should be a math behind it, maybe somethings like BOKEH has some bonus points and doesn't count in the average number . Whatever it is , we should find that because if they ovral score is based on their opinion (not the numbers) , then all of those scientific numbers worth nothings

PNSs are dying because most people don't actually care about the quality of their pictures. Most people were happy enough with the camera on their phone 4 years ago. Every PNS I own easily fits in my normal sized pockets. People don't buy them because they don't care, not because they can't carry them around.

If picture quality was a factor when posting ridiculous selfies or pictures of your food/cat/dog, waiting the evening to post them from your pc wouldn't be a problem - except, as I said, people don't care and, given how much facebook and co. ruin the quality of the picture file anyway, neither should they. It's fine to have an acceptable camera on a phone. But claiming an improvement on that camera is particularly significant is nonsense. Its target audience doesn't care and those who care should be using something else.

They do care, they just don't care to the degree that you or I might.  They still want their low-light photos to come out reasonably detailed and non-blurry; they still want vibrant colors; they still want their phone to focus on the right subject in a fast-moving scene.

It's better to say that people care about image quality to a point.  The convenience of taking photos directly from your phone eventually surpasses concerns about fidelity, but it doesn't completely override it.  And part of the allure of phones like the iPhone 8 Plus and Galaxy Note 8 is that they not only take relatively good photos, but that they take photos that were previously just in the realm of dedicated cameras, such as decent long-range shots (Samsung's Galaxy Cameras weren't really that good outside of having optical zoom) or portraits with shallow depth of field.

Yes, it's people like us who'll fuss over noise levels and HDR accuracy, but I wouldn't say these tests are pointless.  They show an evolution of the phone camera and indicate that we're getting to the point where you can take good shots across a wide variety of situations... and that's what matters.

Well, the camera is the only reason I got an 8 plus, otherwise I'd have been happier with an SE size phone. If they killed the headphone jack, but used the space to put the Plus camera in an SE I'd pay a Plus price for it.

There are porn videos that are in 1080p, don't ask me how I know. I don't think my ex will appreciate what he has lost if I upload potato quality pictures on Instagram nor do my relatives which I only see every two years will appreciate if I share them pictures that are way too grainy even in well lit environments so for a flagship price, it demands a flagship camera.

Mirrorless cameras are also a thing and take a fraction of the space a dslr would while being an order of magnitude better than any phone.

That's why my Grandmother gave her old DSLR to me (http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/fujifilm_finepix_s4000_review/), as she wanted to get a newer camera with the same zoom, but without the bulkiness (good optical zoom is the other benefit of not using a phone).

Added two more video reviews of the camera of the iPhone 8 and 8+, the camera is quite a big improvement over the iPhone 7/7+ especially in low light video recording.

My YouTube recommendations feed is flooded with smartphone comparisons. The Galaxy Note 8 is still faster than the iPhone 8+ when it comes to autofocus and locking into a subject maybe because they both use PDAF and contrast auto focus.

But there's a big difference between the 7+ camera and the 8+ camera, when recording low light videos, the 7+ is losing focus whereas the 8+ does not.

DxOMark isn't a good comparison, given how photography is so subjective and also some other camera ratings that don't make much sense compared to other phones. Also they gimped the photos on the Pixel in a OP5 vs. Pixel comparison.
