The idea of this build is to bring back to life with some changes my first ever pc. Originally a Dell Optiplex GX150 series PC I plan to turn this beast into a full fledged gamer of the time. Unfortunately I no longer have the original case but I do have a case I plan to modify In its stead

 

So to start the original hardware!

 

Dell Optiplex GX150 case

Dell Socket 370 "Modular" Motherboard

256MB of PC133 DDR Ram

20GB IDE Hard Drive

CD ROM Drive

Can't remember what  CPU I had in it 

Some Dell passive heatsink

 

And for the new(ish ) build

 

A Cicero Tower case I had lying around

I will be reusing the motherboard

I have a top to bottom blowing heatsink with a fan!! 

512MB of DDR 133MHz RAM

40GB IDE 100 Hard Drive

CD/DVD RW IDE Drive

Haven't decided on the cpu. Will probably go with one of

my Pentium 3 933MHz, 1GHz, or my 1GHz Celeron model

TSENG ET6000 For my 2D card

2 STB Voodoo 2 12MB 3D cards in SLI

Sound Blaster Live! For all those amazing audio clips

Here's that "modular" motherboard with its 2 extra PCI slots. If you look to the front right that brown connector there releases the bottom 2 PCI slots from the rest of the board and allows you to fit it in a slightly smaller case (That shielding over the rear connections though!)

Good luck with this. Just remember to research the capacitors and check them for bulge. Otherwise you could have a potential firebomb on your hands. I also strongly recommend anti static brushes. They are fantastic for cleaning old hardware.

Definitely. Caps are "fun" lol. I've had to replace them before on other hardware not pc related. The issue with them though is they can go and still look perfect. You need a tester to actually find out if they're good then. Sometimes they will go and all you'll see is a puddle at the bottom too. Multimeter can't give an accurate reading for that unfortunately  Sadly my cap tester has disappeared and i currently need it for testing a TV i'm fixing

 

I prefer to use compressed air a little bit at a time. *Pulls out 30gal 90psi tank*  Yes they are good but I currently don't have access to one and have seen them damage boards with their bristles

heh, last time I saw SLi Voodoo 2 was in my own rig  QDI dual slot 1 board with a 32mb 3Dlabs Oxygen and two Jaton V2s. Almost as useless as my Voodoo 5500 PCI, but looked good

 

I hope you are going to peroxide/clingfilm/sunlight that front panel back to its glorious beigeness !

Yeah that front panel need a damn good whitening lol. Not been getting much sun recently so I need another way 

 

I do have multiple agp cards and i'm considering throwing one in but not sure about that right now

Alright Just a small quick update tonight!! But anyway I've done some slight modification to the case and motherboard tray

 

So I had originally planned to just screw the OEM motherboard tray onto the cases tray using the motherboard standoff holes and drilling into the old OEM tray. That didn't work out so well as you can see its not quite high enough to fit into the OI hole properly. So I'm going to need a spacer of about 1mm thick...

 

Ah the seemingly endless supply of scrap wood in our workshop  This'll do!

Now we need some screws that are short enough to go between the old motherboard tray, the wood and the "new" tray without touching and shorting anything. We seem to be short in 2-3mm screws... So I'll make them! *Bzzzzt* *whiiirrrrr!* (yes there is a screw in there, no i'm not cutting the vise  )

Fits nicely. Nice and tight! ..... wait..... oh man... Remember that mistake I mentioned earlier? Whelp I fucked that up slightly...

The bottom section of the board is touching the side of the case. Can't fit any cards in because there's no slot! I will be using all of the PCI slots this build so that wont't do at all...

 

 

Here have a shitphone side view for now. That will definitely have to be fixed

Well just another small update today. Been really busy with work so progress had been almost nonexistent the past week. BUT

5.5L of Hydrogen peroxide for plastic whitening  Kinda ironic how it works lol. UV light is what causes plastic to yellow yet when H2O2 is added, The reaction whitens it and removes the yellow tint. 

 

 

Now just to wait for a sunny day

For retr0brite, I find that SalonCare 40 works best.  It's a creme that sticks well and gives better results in my experience.  I've done it to several vintage machines.  I use twin Blacklights (High UV type) instead of sunlight.  It takes significantly longer (around 18-24 hours) but does the job just as well!

 

Your build looks great!  You should consider getting a 64gb SSD and using a SATA to IDE adapter, it makes a WORLD of difference, trust me!!

Yeah I would love to use black lights for it but I don't have any.  For now the whitening itself is on hold till it warms up as at this time of year we don't get much sun, too cold out for me,  and work has been crazy these past weeks due to the holiday season. Currently looking for a new mobo for it due to the fact that I really hate the proprietary crap on this Dell one and am quite sick of fiddling with it to get it lined up right  Sooon^TM 

 

Meh maybe I will get one yeah it can make a huge performance improvement but I kinda want to keep it close to how it would have been back then. But since I may be recording from it at some point It would make sense....
