iPhone 8 Is World's Fastest Phone by a longshot

Source 1: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/iphone-8-benchmarks-fastest-phone,review-4676.html

  • According to Tom’s Guide, the iPhone 8 is smashing the competition in certain tests with its six-core A11 Bionic CPU

  • The chip’s two Performance cores promise a 25-percent boost in performance, while its  four high-efficiency cores promise up to a 70-percent improvement over the iPhone 7's A10 Fusion chip.

  • It also has an Apple-designed GPU that's supposed to be 30 percent faster than before.

  • Geekbench 4:

    • On the multicore portion of the test, the iPhone 8 hit 10,170.

    • That's 54% faster than the score from Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 — currently the fastest Android phone.

        • The Galaxy S8+ took more than 4 minutes.

Google “buys” HTC

Source 1: posted by Daring https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/837376-google-to-hire-htcs-best-smartphone-talent/?tab=comments#comment-10460006

Source 2: https://www.androidcentral.com/google-htc-deal?utm_source=ac_tw&utm_medium=tw_card&utm_content=62941&utm_campaign=social

  • Except it’s not an Acquisition.

  • Google has signed an agreement with HTC to hire a team of “Powered by HTC” talent to join Google’s hardware organization.

  • These are the same people who worked closely with Google on the Pixel and Pixel XL

  • The $1.1 Billion deal also gives Google non-exclusive license to HTC’s intellectual property.

  • The deal affects ~2,000 employees, or $550,000 per employee

  • HTC will continue to exist as an independent company, and to make phones alongside Google, including competitive, premium models

    • Though they will be “streamlining” their product lineup

  • Google Execs have said it’s important to tightly couple its artificial intelligence software with a range of devices.

  • Did Google do this just so the talent pool they rely on didn’t dissolve should HTC go under?

Logitech Key-caps/Legend

From Andrew Coonrad:

Hey Linus/Ed,

Hope this note find you well. Thanks for taking the time to look at the G613 Wireless Keyboard.

We wanted to address the comments about keycap quality with Romer G switches.

The switches we use are textured ABS plastic that are then printed and treated with a UV coating. This is a standard process. They are not stickers.

While it is true that dual shot is more durable, it is actually cheaper if you are only doing one layout. We make keyboards for the entire world in many different layouts, which means it's not practical and sometimes not feasible to use dual shot due to the size and position of the typeface of certain characters.

Hope this helps.

Take care.

-Coonrad

From Linus:

Sorry, stickers was probably an unfair word to describe the process.

But it doesn't change our feelings about the durability of the keycaps in use versus the cost of the keyboard.

If you have to do a cheapo French-Canadian layout or whatever that uses printed lettering, then so be it, but for the core SKUsI feel pretty strongly that they should be doubleshot at $150 USD :(

Rumour: Ice Lake is Coming

Source 1: posted by That Minecraft Player https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/835968-intel-to-launch-ice-lake-8-core-16-thread-mainstream-cpus-in-second-half-of-2018/

  • Details leaked from Eurocom, a known manufacturer of high-end laptops and workstations, indicate that Intel is preparing a new series of processors which will further boost the core count of their mainstream platform up to 8 cores, 16 threads- matching AMD Ryzen 7 chips.

  • The Ice Lake lineup will use the Z390 chipset and is planned for launch in second half of 2018

  • Ice Lake will likely be based on Intel’s 10nm process

Pirate Bay secretly enslaving you as a miner

Source 1: posted by GoodBytes https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/835619-the-piratebay-uses-website-visitors-as-miners-without-them-knowing-causes-100-cpu-spikes-on-users/

Source 2:

  • thepiratebay.se (TPB) has been discovered to hijack its visitors' CPU cycles and cause 100% spikes while visiting the site, due to a sneaky cryptocurrency mining script embedded in the website's Javascript.

  • The site has been trialling the use of something called The Coinhive JavaScript Miner which lets you embed a Monero miner directly into your website.

  • Pirate Bay has said:

    • "the miner is being tested for a short period (~24 hours) as a new way to generate revenue."

    • And further noted that, if the test is successful it may go toward entirely replacing ads.

  • Will the final implementation work without generating 100% spikes of CPU usage?

  • Could this be a new major monetization strategy on the web?

    • Or will mining returns for any given cryptocurrency diminish so quickly that ads will remain dominant?

  • AWS has launched its largest EC2 machine (in terms of memory size) yet: the x1e.32xlarge instance with a whopping 4.19TB of RAM.

  • Previously, EC2’s largest instance only featured just over 2TB of memory.

  • These machines feature quad-socket Intel Xeon processors running at 2.3 GHz, up to 25 Gbps of network bandwidth and two 1,920GB SSDs.

  • Now available in four AWS regions:

    • US East (Northern Virginia), $26.688 per hour

    • US West (Oregon),

    • EU (Ireland)

    • Asia Pacific (Tokyo). $38.688 per hour

  • Who’s it for?: "We expect the [new AWS] instances to provide an immediate improvement to applications that require large amounts of memory, including real-time analytics platforms and other technologies that utilize in-memory processing,"

  • With the introduction of the 4 TB machines, AWS added support for up to 14 Gbps of dedicated bandwidth to its block storage service, Elastic Block Store, with 80,000 IOPS per instance.

  • These instances are certified to run SAP’s HANA in-memory database and its various tools, and SAP will offer direct support for running these applications on these instances.

  • Microsoft has also unveiled its new M-Series machines in Azure offering 3.5 TB.

Beats keeps using cables that aren’t supported by Apple’s new computers

Source 1: https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/9/5/16254778/beats-micro-usb-cables-while-apple-goes-usbc-lightning

  • For the past two months, Apple has been giving students who buy a new MacBook or MacBook Pro a pair of Beats headphones for free- even though Beats headphones can’t be charged by a new MacBook or the MacBook’s power brick without an adapter.

    • All new Apple Laptops: USB-C.

    • Beats Solo3 Wireless: USB to Micro USB cable

    • Beats X: USB to Lightning cable.

  • Therefore, if you have a MacBook, an iPhone, and a pair of Beats Solo 3s, you’ll need 3 different cables and up to 2 adapters.

  • The problem persists: Beats just launched the Studio 3 Wireless — that once again rely on a USB to Micro USB cable

  • Navy says it makes more sense to use the Xbox 360 controller than the existing, clunky joystick-style solution

  • Using the Xbox controller not only reduces costs, but makes things easier for younger sailors who grew up playing games on the Xbox and similar consoles

  • Xbox 360 controllers are readily available for less than 30 bucks; by contrast, the old control system cost about $38,000

  • This isn’t the first time the US military has used the Xbox 360 controller; it’s also been used to fly drones and control laser-based weapons

Linus understands Taiwan. I know someone who is doing R&D for the "next" Oculus Rift, which Oculus doesn't even admit exists. When we were talking about hTC vive 2, he knew everything about it, because he has a junior classmate who is doing R&D for the vive 2. They talk and discuss all the time without Oculus or Steam knowing about it. That is just how small the top R&D world is.

You would not be able to imagine the speed that the motherboard companies make the new MBs as soon as the specs of a new platform is announced to them. It pretty much takes less than one (Taiwanese) workday for the first prototypes to come out.

Asus Acer Gigabyte MSI ASRock hTC Benq Avermedia D-link Thermaltake ADATA VIA  Foxconn LITE-ON ECS RiTek Realtek TSMC Transcend Quanta Enermax Ducky In-Win SilverStone G.SKILL Cooler Master QNAP Sea Sonic

What do these companies have in common?

They are all from Taiwan and Awesome!

Am I crazy or is the whole tpb mining thing a pretty legit idea for a business model. What if you could get access to extra features on a site if you do x amount of mining for them. Just install, set some times or even manual activation and you'll get premium access to a site. Like x hours of mining for x days of premium access.

I love how the Intel shills can't even talk about an Intel rumor without crapping all over AMD.  How pathetic.  Not even Trump puts this much effort into trying to make people think he's something he's not.

I don't understand what the issue with ThePirateBay is? As I understand it only mines while you're on the page and it stops as soon as you close the tab, correct? How is this a bad thing? As a long time pirate I'd gladly support TBP by letting them use my CPU for mining while I browse the site. Infact I think this is a genius approach and an awesome alternative to ads that many sites should utilize. You say there is a way to support a site without them having to put third party bullshit on their page? Sigh me up. If you're only browsing you're not going to get much performance loss while only browsing pages. This won't work on sites that stream videos like youtube unless they find a way to make the script only use a percentage of your CPU. Anyway, I wish TPB made this permanently and removed their ads, I'd love to support them somehow but I refuse to turn my adblock off because their ads are the worst kind.

NO! It's art, it's colonialism and you'll never get it!

I consider myself a pretty decent internet pirate. I use Usenet for the most things, but sometimes I want to download something that's a little bit older and outside my usenet provider's retention or it's been removed, so then I turn to torrents. But tpb is the only tracker I know that still gives decent results. There's a couple others I try, but usually I get way less results. I'd really like to get onto a private tracker (I have the infrastructure at home to seed), but have no idea how to get in.

BTW - God tier beard.

in regards to the meme discussion, copyright over them has been a thing for years now, especially with Whynne's Trollface, https://kotaku.com/the-maker-of-the-trollface-meme-is-counting-his-money-1696228810

At the meme’s height, when it was plastered on t-shirts at Hot Topic, Ramirez would pull in between $10,000 and $15,000 every few months. One document Ramirez showed me totaled out to $10,049.

13:00, Linus talking about having more cores in Android phones:

Quote

historically it hasn't made a huge difference to performance in the applications that most people are using.

Ohh Linus... Once again trying to add his experience with desktops to smartphones even though they are very different.

Android is really good at taking advantage of multiple cores (compared to the average Windows program). It is not uncommon to see load on all 8 cores on a modern Android SoC doing everyday things like browsing the web, installing an app, playing a game, or things like that.

You run a program and it makes you join their content delivery network. The more bandwidth you contribute, the more "hath" you get, which is currency for unlocking extra features (like bigger thumbnails, more thumbnail rows, etc) and putting out bounties for content.

The websites serves a TON of images and requires quite a lot of bandwidth for something just serving images (current network load is 4Gbps). 99.65% of that 4Gbps load is taken care of by the community members.

I agree. To me, having a JS miner seems a lot more honest, direct way to support any website that you visit. Had TPB disclosed that they were going to do this prior to doing it, I don't see how anyone could really complain. As long as it can be turned off either via manual toggle or automatically after a minute or so (whatever amount of time is deemed as the cost incurred by a page-hit), I would have no problem with any website doing this.

I think that it is appropriate for a website's users give back to sites that they frequent, in the manner that the individual user desires. Personally, I prefer to give anonymously; (being recognized for small things that I do for others has always made me uncomfortable). I do buy things from individual websites' merch stores on occasion. I'm really not a fan of how pervasive the ad monetization of the www is; it can work, but all too frequently I find it to be disingenuous. I like the idea behind Flatter, but that has never really taken off -- both in general as well as on most of the websites that I frequent. In the end, coin mining is a monetization option that I would be comfortable doing.

I wanted to comment on the AMD unified CPU/GPU compute fusion thing. AMD delivered! The problem is, this is only true in their APU chips and who wants to use those? But the APUs do share memory and virtual page tables and software can seamlessly switch between x86 and GPU processing.

Maybe if some of the rumors are true, AMD will release Epyc/Threadripper versions that contain Zeppelin and Vega dies on shared Infinity Fabric. Those might be worth using.
