• Google has signed an agreement with HTC to hire a team of “Powered by HTC” talent to join Google’s hardware organization.

• These are the same people who worked closely with Google on the Pixel and Pixel XL

• The $1.1 Billion deal also gives Google non-exclusive license to HTC’s intellectual property.

• The deal affects ~2,000 employees, or $550,000 per employee

• HTC will continue to exist as an independent company, and to make phones alongside Google, including competitive, premium models

  • Though they will be “streamlining” their product lineup

• Google Execs have said it’s important to tightly couple its artificial intelligence software with a range of devices.

Hope this note find you well. Thanks for taking the time to look at the G613 Wireless Keyboard.

 

We wanted to address the comments about keycap quality with Romer G switches.

The switches we use are textured ABS plastic that are then printed and treated with a UV coating. This is a standard process. They are not stickers.

 

While it is true that dual shot is more durable, it is actually cheaper if you are only doing one layout. We make keyboards for the entire world in many different layouts, which means it's not practical and sometimes not feasible to use dual shot due to the size and position of the typeface of certain characters.

Sorry, stickers was probably an unfair word to describe the process.

But it doesn't change our feelings about the durability of the keycaps in use versus the cost of the keyboard.

If you have to do a cheapo French-Canadian layout or whatever that uses printed lettering, then so be it, but for the core SKUsI feel pretty strongly that they should be doubleshot at $150 USD

• thepiratebay.se (TPB) has been discovered to hijack its visitors' CPU cycles and cause 100% spikes while visiting the site, due to a sneaky cryptocurrency mining script embedded in the website's Javascript.

• The site has been trialling the use of something called The Coinhive JavaScript Miner which lets you embed a Monero miner directly into your website.

• Pirate Bay has said:

  • "the miner is being tested for a short period (~24 hours) as a new way to generate revenue."

  • And further noted that, if the test is successful it may go toward entirely replacing ads.

• Will the final implementation work without generating 100% spikes of CPU usage?

• Could this be a new major monetization strategy on the web?

• A court in The Hague, Netherlands has annulled a European patent of Asetek for water cooling in the Netherlands because of lack of inventiveness.

• Asetek accused Cooler Master of patent infringement.

• As a result of the ruling Asetek has to reimburse the costs of Cooler Master. In total, it amounts to almost 113,000 euros.

Linus understands Taiwan. I know someone who is doing R&D for the "next" Oculus Rift, which Oculus doesn't even admit exists. When we were talking about hTC vive 2, he knew everything about it, because he has a junior classmate who is doing R&D for the vive 2. They talk and discuss all the time without Oculus or Steam knowing about it. That is just how small the top R&D world is.

You would not be able to imagine the speed that the motherboard companies make the new MBs as soon as the specs of a new platform is announced to them. It pretty much takes less than one (Taiwanese) workday for the first prototypes to come out.

Am I crazy or is the whole tpb mining thing a pretty legit idea for a business model. What if you could get access to extra features on a site if you do x amount of mining for them. Just install, set some times or even manual activation and you'll get premium access to a site. Like x hours of mining for x days of premium access.

As a long time pirate I'd gladly support TBP by letting them use my CPU for mining while I browse the site. Infact I think this is a genius approach and an awesome alternative to ads that many sites should utilize. Sigh me up. If you're only browsing you're not going to get much performance loss while only browsing pages. I use Usenet for the most things, but sometimes I want to download something that's a little bit older and outside my usenet provider's retention or it's been removed, so then I turn to torrents. But tpb is the only tracker I know that still gives decent results. There's a couple others I try, but usually I get way less results. I'd really like to get onto a private tracker (I have the infrastructure at home to seed), but have no idea how to get in.

Android is really good at taking advantage of multiple cores (compared to the average Windows program). It is not uncommon to see load on all 8 cores on a modern Android SoC doing everyday things like browsing the web, installing an app, playing a game, or things like that.

A website I regularly browse does this.

You run a program and it makes you join their content delivery network. The more bandwidth you contribute, the more "hath" you get, which is currency for unlocking extra features (like bigger thumbnails, more thumbnail rows, etc) and putting out bounties for content.

The websites serves a TON of images and requires quite a lot of bandwidth for something just serving images (current network load is 4Gbps). 99.65% of that 4Gbps load is taken care of by the community members.

I agree. To me, having a JS miner seems a lot more honest, direct way to support any website that you visit. Had TPB disclosed that they were going to do this prior to doing it, I don't see how anyone could really complain. As long as it can be turned off either via manual toggle or automatically after a minute or so (whatever amount of time is deemed as the cost incurred by a page-hit), I would have no problem with any website doing this.

 

I think that it is appropriate for a website's users give back to sites that they frequent, in the manner that the individual user desires. Personally, I prefer to give anonymously; (being recognized for small things that I do for others has always made me uncomfortable). I do buy things from individual websites' merch stores on occasion. I'm really not a fan of how pervasive the ad monetization of the www is; it can work, but all too frequently I find it to be disingenuous. I like the idea behind Flatter, but that has never really taken off -- both in general as well as on most of the websites that I frequent. In the end, coin mining is a monetization option that I would be comfortable doing.

I wanted to comment on the AMD unified CPU/GPU compute fusion thing. AMD delivered! The problem is, this is only true in their APU chips and who wants to use those? But the APUs do share memory and virtual page tables and software can seamlessly switch between x86 and GPU processing.

 

Maybe if some of the rumors are true, AMD will release Epyc/Threadripper versions that contain Zeppelin and Vega dies on shared Infinity Fabric. Those might be worth using.
