Monitor or Headphones?

15 members have voted

  1. 1. Which one

    • Monitor (Asus - VG245H - $190)
      11
    • Headphones (Maybe over $200. Thinking maybe Beyerdynamic DT 990s)
      4

So I currently use a 39" 1080p TV as my monitor and a sound bar for audio but I'm not really sure which one I should go for.

The monitor is cheaper. Both I can put to use right away, and both I'm going to get eventually. If I get one now well like middle of next month, I'll get the other when I go to build my planned upgrade/rebuild/new build early next year.

Are you fine gaming with a TV though? I don't know if it's Luke or Linus who said that TVs have lower refresh rates than monitors. So if I'm in the same position, I'd pick the monitor.

The headphones can come later, I'd go with the monitor and then save up the remainder to go towards a future set of headphones :)

That's not... true?

I think you're referring to response times.

The thing I think he's thinking of is the advertised refresh rate over the actual refresh rate and of course response times.

TVs the large majority (basically all of them) are 60Hz panels and will advertise as a higher refresh rate.

Response times I am sure is absolutely horrendous at least in comparison to most standard VA/TN/IPS panels.

For the headphones, I'm thinking of just going for a $130 pair of Sennheisers. I mean Sennheiser so it should sound pretty good. IIRC You have ATH-MX40s from AudioTechnica which I heard the more expensive ATH-MX50s weren't as balanced as other headphones so I really don't know, but I don't think I actually want to spend much more than $200 on a pair of wired headphones. I'll go up to $300 for wireless ones when the time is right but right now I'm just looking for a wired set to live at my desk.

Drak3 just likes having multiple monitors whenever possible. Headphones, to Drak3, are only good for porn and on the move.

Definitely go for the headphone, imo. Main reason is, your budget here will get you a good pair in the grand scheme of things, whereas if you buy a monitor you can get away with buying something that’s acceptable, but not really exceptional at all… perhaps 1440p60 if you’re willing to give up IPS, or a nice 1080p60 display instead. Nothing all that spectacular compared to a solid, $200 set of cans.

I lean towards the monitor because my RCA soundbar is pretty good.

I'm also on the same boat, I have $200 in amazon credits and I'm trying to decide if I should buy a 4k monitor or just buy some dt 770s with the $200 and some random stuff and call it at day. My deciding factor would be the black friday sale though as that will determine how much I have to add to get that monitor (anything more than $300 and not a dell monitor is a no go). So yeah, I guess wait for the black friday sale as there would probably even be a 1440p monitor for less than $300.

I guess I can wait until then, but I'm not so sure I want to.

Headphones.

I could never go down in TV/monitor size, I could only stand to stay the same or go larger.

Also $200 headphones are usually pretty damn good headphones while $200 monitors are usually good but nothing I'd write home about.

Ah see, I often do go to a smaller monitor when I'm at work and I like that I don't have to move my head. Frankly 39" is too big to be close to it like a monitor. Probably not good for the eyes either.

Like I said, I can live with my RCA soundbar for a few more months.
