1080ti overkill for 1440p 144Hz gaming?

VictorVitao666

Been thinking of buying the 1080ti, but I want to know if it's overkill for 1440p 144Hz gaming.

Nope, it's not. Not even close. Even double the performance wouldn't be overkill - Depending what games you play, and in what settings they have to reach how much fps.

I have 1440p / 144+ Hz, and a GTX 1080. When i go into Ghost Recon Wildlands, and crank everything up to max, i sit at around 45-50 fps~.

A 1080 ti won't even get 75 fps here.

Of Rise of the Tomb Raider with SSAA x4 (if you NEED this setting). Also, not even 60 fps with my GTX 1080.

1080 Ti is more like your minimum... your going to have to turn down shadows and AA in some games but youll be solid otherwise.

A 1080Ti is inadequate for 1440p 144hz gaming if you're aiming for max settings.

As above, it always depends on your chosen games.

A 1080ti is only overkill if it is stretching or over your budget. If you're happy gaming at high instead of ultra with those settings then yes, it probably is overkill. If you either have a relatively unlimited/carefree budget and/or you want to be able to play the latest games now/in the near future at the higher end settings then it makes perfect sense.

I think the issue for me is that if I don't go for the best I can get I always end up with buyers remorse under the thinking 'for a few week's extra savings I could have had X'. It probably also pushes my upgrade cycle back by more time equivalent than what it would have been at a lower end model. An 1080ti might not 'need' replacing for another year or two longer than a 1070 and so I would technically 'save' money in the longrun anyway. Of course this theory is broken every time a manufacturer makes a lightyear leap forward in architecture/features.

I would coin it as just perfect. But if you want a constant 144 FPS on 1440P capped on the latest AAA titltes maxed out, I'm afraid none of the current gen can do it yet. Maybe Volta but that's going to be a while.

Dishonored 2, I'm getting approx 120-130fps at maxed settings 1440p w/ 1080Ti strix.

Prey, I'm getting approx 135-150fps at maxed settings 1440p w/ 1080Ti strix.

Just two games I'm playing for now. Sure these aren't the games everyone play normally, but there are some benchmarks floating around with similar titles.

So no I won't consider it overkill, I consider it perfect/nice. As long as I don't dip below 100fps I can be perfectly fine with this setup.

Then again it depends on WHAT games you want to play.
Do you want to play PUBG?
Do you want to play Ashes of Singularity?
Do you want to play Witcher 3?

all three games i quoted above are quite intensive and float around the 100fps mark or less if im not wrong at 1440p.

GTX 1080TI at 1440p 144hz. Is the perfect choice and setup for any games. That why i spent over 1000 pounds on my 1080ti with my 1440p 144hz G-Sync Monitor. Every game i've played its the perfect choice between graphics and fps speed. Cant get much better.  ATM im playing witcher 3 modded with over 50 different mods and ultra settings and some really hardcore graphic mods for it. And 4x AA on hairworks in game. And im getting 85 to 120 fps in game. At 1440p. The most demanding game ive played is ghost recon wildands on utlra settings and im getting 60 to 90 fps. But thats the most demanding game ive played and trust me ive been playing all the demanding games over the last year.

I have a 1080ti and play 1440p 144hz.

In most new AAA games the 1080ti at Ultra settings will get between 100-120 FPS.
For example GTA5 and the Destiny 2 beta.

That's a silly title to bring up, I doubt you can max that at 1080p.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Silly as in? I did say PUBG is relatively intensive graphics wise, in line with Witcher 3. I know it because I've played both games in and out.

Nope, not at all. You need it at that res/refresh rate. Also keeping in mind about future AAA titles, I don't see it ever being overkill for 1440p. But it won't become obsolete anytime soon either, so you are pretty good for a long time before your next upgrade.

I pull the following, in 1440p with 1.25 super sampling.

1. Squad 100fps-144hz (odd dip map dependant) mix of settings

2. RUST 100fps never drops everything super high/ultra

3. Insurgency 144fps never drops everything maxed

Silly as in we can assume a 1080 Ti couldn't even push it at high settings at 1080p. It wasn't until I set everything (minus render distance) to very low did I consistently achieve 144Hz at 1440p.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

So is it best to wait until the next generation of cards if I want to jump into 1440P/144hz gaming if the 1080ti isn't adequate?

That's not because of the 1080 ti, but because of the CPU.

And the Fact, that PUBG is a horribly bad optimized Game that's not even in beta status.

Of course it runs bad, on literaly anything.

1080ti is great for 1440p 144hz.
