iPhones did get a reputation for lasting a long time if you care for them.

it's slowly been diminishing though.

However, as long as 1 year warranty is legal in the US, they don't have a case. The argument of the carrier contract is ridiculous: first, you can buy an unlocked phone directly from Apple, buying through the carrier is a (dubious) choice. Second, if you choose to buy from the carrier, it is the carrier who imposes the 2 year minimum contract in return for "financing" your purchase. Hence, if you think locking you for 2 years for buying a product with a 1 year warranty is wrong, it is you carrier you should complain to. You cannot just go to a store who offers 5 year loans, purchase the phone there, then tell the manufacturer that you "reasonably expected" the warranty to be 5 years, even if it's clearly written what the warranty of the product is in the relevant warranty booklet or whatever. 

But if "I expected instead of reading" is to be accepted as an argument, then one again it should be aimed at the carrier, which is who designed the 2-year arrangement and therefore drove your expectations. It's insane to complain at a manufacturer based on the practices of your retailer of choice (just like it would be to blame the retailer for the faults of the manufacturer). 

There are companies in India who offer at least 6 months of warranty. But, it's pretty much pointless here. Because the after sales service is almost nonexistent in this country. If it exists, then they don't really fix your device properly. When they do fix it, it's usually more than a week after submitting the appliance/gadget for repair. Though the above is applicable for some Chinese companies and some local companies.

 

In other cases, it's either unmatched service, or non existent after sales service.

yep, my iphone 5 is still kicking with no issues at all. 

Maybe replace the battery when it finally dies

My mother still has a perfectly working 5C that I got her on launch. Her first iPhone and still kicking.

 

I had 4S from launch until 2013 when I dropped it in water; it died. Then got a Oneplus One...terrible mistake for me anyway haha. What a buggy device, and them falling out with Cyanogen meant no more software updates or support unless a user roots their phone themselves.

I have no doubt my 4S would still be working fine; albeit the battery won't last as long anymore if I didn't drop it in water and kill it.

 

In the EU you also get a 1 year warranty with Apple, but with consumer laws you get a minimum 2-6 years ( even more in some EU countries ) for any manufacturing/design defects by which the manufacturer needs to repair or replace.

 

The suit sounds silly given the laws in the area; now if they were in the EU and made that suit Apple would happily oblige under consumer law.

apple must hate the UK, as they have to work without fault for at least 5 years or the customer is entitled to a repair or replacement.

I was just posting about that.

 

In Ireland we have 6 years with Consumer Law if there's a manufacturing defect, ( anything outside of accidental damage ), 1-2 years for direct limited manufacture warranty depending on type of product. Apple even provide all those details, and a link to the European Consumer Centre on their site here, if you have a complaint.

 

Seems US really needs to get their consumer protections sorted out!

There's no missed context here guys, this was a production fault affecting multiple people and Apple basically said "meh, your phone is out of warranty so we don't care".

 

This is the company the iSheep say are justified overcharging because you're paying for the Apple experience. The only experience these customers got was butt rape.

They stopped manufacturing of the iPhone 6 alone time ago and good luck trying to get something replaced out of warranty at any company. It sorta goes into the whole disposable tech but by 3 years you are going to buy the new iPhone so it doesn't really matter anyways. Also the price justification is a whole different story. To simply buy it because it's apple is stupid. But having justified reasons that suit you better going with Apple is a valid reason.

Can't jump on the Apple hate bandwagon on this one. I deal with customers and cell phones on a daily basis and 1YR warranty is THE standard, it's not Apple exclusive. If you want any coverage after the first year, you buy an extended plan or stop complaining your phone malfunctioned after a year and you now have to pay for a new one.

 

It does suck warranties aren't 2 years as they should be considering that's the contract standard be it a line contract or a device payment.

Yeah, that's not how it works. Costs pass-through to prices depends on the demand elasticity, manufacturers don't simply charge higher prices blindly regardless of what maximizes their profits. In practice, the tax burden is seldom passed 100% to consumers nor absorbed 100% by the firms.

 

Is also be glad to see the source for iPhones costing twice as much in Ireland.

What did anyone expect them to say? 

 

That they expect their phones to last longer than their warranty period so everyone and their dog could use the court transcript as evidence that the expected lifespan of the phone is longer than their warranty, and demand replacement 8 months outside warranty?

 

Not to mention some money-hungry lawyer would instantly open a class-action lawsuit.

Not really sure how I feel about this specific case, But I would like to see a class action for all those products that supposedly stop working just after warranty expires.    If there s statistical evidence that that actually happens I'd like all those companies to be done with some type of antitrust/fraud case.
