(x2)R9 290 lag spikes

I have 2 r9 290's.

When i turned my computer on today, i tried playing League of Legends, and it didnt work because the screen was just black and it said there was some problems with direct x, dont remember exactly what is was.

 

Then i tried with overwatch to see if it was something with LoL or the computer in general, overwatch starts fine but its getting alot of lag spikes when in the menu.

 

So i reinstalled the drivers with some trouble, and with no luck, did not fix the problem, so I tested some more with overwatch and found out when I open another window while overwatch is open i get around 600-700 MHz on the gpu clock, but when the "focus" is on overwatch i get all from 300 to 900 MHz. 

What should i do?

IDK about what on what resolution you are playing but I would remove 1 of the cards and test them 1 by 1. Could be a lot of things - cards  overheating, psu going bad and not enough power .....

Im going to try what komar said, but in overwatch its playable with vsync on, get stable 140 ish fps, if not i get over 300 and dips to 30 often. wtf? still lagging in the menus

From the GPU clock frequencies, it sounds like your GPUs are thermal throttling.

To be sure that IS actually happening, run MSi Afterbutner or GPU-Z in the background, and play....Overwatch or LoL for 5 ~ 10 minutes.

Check the recorded history. Either software will show temperatures, frequencies, voltages, etc.

cant play the games because of the intense lag, im sure its not thermal throttling.

Update;  

Earlier i played TF2 without no problem, i tried installing old amd drivers with no success, got under 10 fps on TF2.  

Tried to disable crossfire, then started overwatch with alot less lag spikes, then the game crashed saying it lost my rendering device?!?

Tested with the cards alone, doesnt work either

Have you ACTUALLY confirmed it is not thermal throttling, and NOT just guessing?

Like I said, it just takes a few minutes to find out whether or not it is thermal throttling.

 

Now that you said you reinstalled the drivers, did you use DDU to completely wipe the old drivers before installing the new ones?

You also have NOT given us any information about the rest of the system.

- What CPU are you using?

- Which motherboard make and model?

- Power supply brand and model?

- etc?

 

Just checking your post/thread history now, you also tried to overclock your CPU, but it did not go so well.

Did you check to see to make sure your CPU is stable?

Is the CPU overheating?

 

There is so much we don't know, and you are not willing to test or report back.

 

Basically, if we use a car analogy....you are calling a car shop that is out your country...saying your BMW engine is blowing out smoke.

You don't tell us the year of the card, which model, nothing.

Like how are we supposed to help? We are not sitting beside you, in your room, looking at your computer.

why do you have to be a dick about it?  

its so obvious its not thermal throttling as i said i cant play the game because of lag, which you might understand it happens as the game starts, not later when my pc gets too hot

anyway i fixed it myself, was software related so reinstalled windows fixed it
